3 Great Towns For Young Couples In The Merrimack Valley, MA

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

Located between the Massachusetts and New Hampshire borders, the Merrimack Valley runs along the Merrimack River. There are 24 cities and towns in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts with the eastern portion generally being more rural. The Massachusetts side is part of the Greater Boston area. Travel through the valley is by Interstate 495. Here are Merrimack Valley's top three towns for young couples.

1. Tyngsborough

Young couples would do well to get in on the Tyngsborough boom and help propel the town toward the future. Tyngsborough was a vacation community with most of its population comprised of summer residences. Now, the town has a population of over 10,000 and growing, as evidenced by a boom in residential construction with median home prices at $375,300. New construction includes both a junior and senior high school, so those getting in early may get a say in the new school system, and police station. Only 30 minutes from Boston along the Route 3 corridor, this picturesque town has many streams, lakes and large ponds. Maintaining its small-town New England character while building up its services to support the increase in population is important to Tyngsborough citizens. Additional schools and businesses to meet increased demands brings local jobs. Average salaries are $64,000.

2. Andover

Andover has a high-performing school system in both public and private schooling. Young couples would do well to plan ahead and take advantage of this setting. Although single-family homes are expensive (medium price is $914,400), condos are less expensive and Andover is just 20 miles north of Boston for an easy commute. Located at the intersection of Interstates 93 and 495 and close to Logan Airport, this suburban area has just 29,000 residents. Andover is the place to be for those in high-tech occupations. Hewlett-Packard, Raytheon, Gillette, Genetics Institute and others have set up shop here where average salaries are $118,000.

3. Westford

Located in the technology belt, its 22,000 residents enjoy numerous year-round festivals and events. There is a variety of transports to and from town from busses to roadways. Technology corporations Samsung, Seagate, Red Hat, Visual Solutions and HydroDot have offices here providing some in-town employment. Westford is the home of running-shoe manufacturer Puma, who has its North American Headquarters in town. The town is best known for Westford Academy, a nationally top-ranked, public high school geared toward college placement. The school, founded in 1792, is one of the oldest public schools in the United States and is steeped in history. Single-family homes average $606,500 and average salaries are $92,000.
