Acoustic Java Supports a More Creative Economy in Worcester, MA

By S. Mathur

Acoustic Java is a creative coffee house built with the past and the future in mind. Owner David Fullerton explains that "...we have created our cafe space with the institutional history of the coffee house in mind. Coffee houses have played an important role as gathering places in the development of the modern world as we know it. Our motto at Acoustic Java is "As music tames the savage beast, coffee civilizes man unkind." At our cafe, we truly believe that great coffee and tea help to make the world a better place in a small but important way, by inspiring and engaging people."

Acoustic Java offers coffee, tea, books and music, bringing together Fullerton's own favorite pastimes: "I love coffee, tea, books, and music. The cafe and coffee roastery at Acoustic Java are places for sharing and exploring these passions. With coffee, tea, books, and music, there is always something new to learn. We have a small but highly selective bookstore in the cafe. Fridays, between noon and 3, and sometimes on weekends, we feature live music by aspiring professional local and traveling musicians. We also have our own branded line of 100% organic teas called Julia's Organics which we package on-site. And, additionally, we offer a full menu of sandwiches, salads, soups, and wraps, all featuring local and organic wholesome ingredients."

With an eye to the future, Acoustic Java also consciously uses materials from a sustainable supply chain, and supports certifications from Fair Trade, Organic, Bird Friendly, and Rain Forest Alliance coffees and teas. There is also the mission to educate coffee and tea drinkers about the source of their food, their place in the supply chain, and where the consumption of coffee in the United States fits in the big picture.

While the big stores like Starbucks and Dunkin' aim for consistency, small local stores like Acoustic Java can be creative. Roasting small batches of coffee actually allows for more control over taste and flavor. Good coffee, books and music promote good conversations, keeping people awake but also creative and engaged. Local artwork on the brick walls and the aroma of warm cinnamon rolls create an inviting ambience. Add free WiFi, and you have a favorite study spot for students from nearby Clark University.

Regulars are pleasantly surprised to be remembered by name. Overall customer reviews suggest that Acoustic Java has succeeded well in its mission to create a home away from home. It has also become something of a local landmark, with residents bringing visitors from out of town to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

And for those who take away happy memories of their visit, there's also an online store which ships Acoustic Java coffees and teas to locations around the country. The online store also carries a interesting selection of books as well as music and paintings by local artists. Every college town deserves its own special coffee house, and with Acoustic Java, Worcester MA seems to have hit the jackpot.
