In recent years, do you believe the demand for generators has increased, decreased, or stayed the same?

The demand for generators has increased due to the increasing number and duration of power outages.

Why do you believe that happened?

The power grid is aging and there is a lack of public investment in the infrastructure to maintain and repair it. Also as the population ages the demographics are favorable for the ease of automatic back up power. As generators become more popular, awareness of the benefits of standby generators increases, building demand.

Can you please explain the general concept behind how generators work?

Standby generators provide automatic backup power needed to protect your home and family during a power outage. Connected to a home's existing liquid propane or natural gas fuel supply, it kicks in automatically within seconds of determining power loss. It runs for as long as necessary until utility power returns.

The generator system consists of a generator and transfer switch. The generator sits outside of the home or business like a central air conditioner, while the transfer switch is usually located next to the main electrical panel and in some cases replaces it entirely.

What are some benefits of having a generator installed?

The generator powers important systems like wells, heat, sump pumps, air conditioning, refrigeration and freezers. Homeowners can stay comfortably and safely in their homes and use their home amenities (showering, cooking, entertainment, electronics, etc.) This ensures that the homeowner does not have to leave home and incur hotel charges or lose hundreds of dollars of food from refrigerators and freezers. Pets, small children and elderly family members are able to stay comfortably at home.

Standby generators work automatically whether the homeowner is home or away, protecting the home from potential water damage from frozen pipes or lack of power for sump pumps.

When phone lines are down the generator provides customers the security of keeping cell phones and electronics charged. They can communicate with others and stay updated on emergency information.

Does every house, no matter the size, only require one backup generator? If not, what is the concept behind this?

Generators are sized based on the customer's power needs. Customers can chose essential circuits covering the basics such as lights and refrigeration. Or they can chose managed whole house or complete whole house coverage. An in home consultation allows us to determine the customer's needs and budget and create a proposal to meet their needs.

Great article! Our house has power outages at least 4 times a year. They aren't bad, generally less than a day. I am just waiting for the day when we have a power outage that we genuinely need backup
