Barre and Soul Is A Feminist Fitness Empire

Andrea Isabelle Lucas wants women of the world to rock the boat, make noise, and wear winged eyeliner in the pool if they want to. A fiery feminist, Lucas believes every woman should make their head space feel as good as their body does while simultaneously owning every bit of who they are.

She also believes that the mind/body combination makes yoga a powerful practice for people across the world. It was for this reason that she launched studios throughout the Boston area, with a headquarters in Harvard Square.

Lucas sees yoga as a unique opportunity to build focus on multiple levels physically and spiritually/emotionally/mentally. The practice enhances well-being, balance, and strength inside and out.

"Yoga can relieve stress through both the physical and mindfulness elements it delivers," Lucas said. "It also can relieve stress just by creating a time and space apart from the often hectic and high-pressure lives that many of us lead in today's demanding, competitive culture."

Today, Lucas is known as the boss behind a feminist fitness empire, and Barre & Soul has transformed into "a collection of modern boutique studios teaching a world-class, science-based proprietary barre and yoga method." Barre & Soul offers both yoga and their own signature Barre & Soul classes.

The Barre & Soul signature classes incorporate the mindfulness element of yoga with the proven tradition of Lotte Berk-based Barre classes. These assimilate constituents of ballet conditioning, Pilates, yoga, and calisthenics all into one class. They utilize a mat, a ballet barre, and light weights.

"Our classes combine toning, stamina building and stretching along with mindfulness and intention," Lucas said.

Before launching her fitness empire, Lucas had a rough road. She survived teenage pregnancy, domestic abuse, and divorce. She uses her own story to empower and inspire others, using Barre and Soul as a means of reaching out to the community.

"I want every one of our clients to know deeply that they can achieve their boldest goals, and overcome their most complex and seemingly overwhelming challenges - whether they are physical, professional or private struggles," Lucas said.

When working consistently in a supportive community environment, the entire fitness process becomes a transformative experience.
