Best Lunch Spots in Brookline: Featuring Michael's Deli and OTTO Pizza

By Kristen Bosse

Boston, especially the startup and creative world, likes to make the most of mid-day lunch breaks. Take a peek outside your window overlooking the city around noon and you are sure to see the streets packed with professionals rushing to grab a quick lunch. While some choose to pack their lunch to save time, others demand to be able to walk outside and grab a delicious and affordable option in minutes. Luckily, two restaurants in Brookline are coming through for time strained Boston professionals. Otto Pizza and Michael's Deli are known in the area as some of the best pizza and sandwiches in town. Not only this, but they are able to whip out these tasty eats rapidly for those in a rush.

Michael's Deli

Since 1977, Michael's Deli has been dishing out some of the best New York style deli sandwiches to Brookline and Greater Boston residents. Known to most as the "Corned Beef King", Owner Steven Peljovich has surely earned this title with his famous homemade corned beef Reuben. Customers are often seen happily standing in huge lines stretching out the door, with the promise of some of the best sandwiches in Boston waiting for them. Unlike many sandwich shops that get their meats cooked from their distributors, Steven cooks 80%-90% of his menu onsite. In fact, much of the raw meat is taken out of New York, arguably the Deli capital of the world. Take a look at their famous Reuben below.

However, we're not the only one recognizing Michael's Deli as the premier sandwich shop of Greater Boston. Zagat recently featured their classic Reuben as one of the "8 best Sandwiches in Boston". Also, "Best of Boston" named them Best Boston Deli in 2013! If that doesn't convince you, check out what the customers are saying on Yelp! In an exclusive interview with the Owner, Steven also commented on his experience with the customers.

"The greatest compliment that my guests give me is that my food reminds them of the places their parents/grandparents took them to when they were kids. My guests appreciate the freshness of my food and the generous portion sizes."

Be sure to check out their website to see their extensive menu of deli options. Whether it be corned beef, pastrami, or their popular sour pickles, you are sure to find something that caters to your tastes. If first timers need a suggestion, Steven recommends you try the "Thorty Black and Gold" sandwich. This Boston Bruins tribute contains black pastrami, cheddar cheese, honey mustard, and hot peppers. For every sandwich sold, $1 is donated to the Shawn Thornton Foundation. What a delicious way to help spread awareness!

OTTO Pizza

Pizza is without a doubt one of the best items to eat for a quick lunch. Apart from its obvious portability, you can choose from a variety of different toppings and flavor options. Otto's Pizza, originally established in Portland, ME, has rapidly made a name for itself in the city of Boston. With perhaps hundreds of pizza shops to choose from, Boston locals choose OTTO over others for two main reasons- variety and quality of ingredients. Upon walking into their Coolidge Corner location and glimpsing up at the menu, my taste buds had a hard time deciphering my true craving. Should I try the butternut squash, ricotta, and cranberry? Or instead, perhaps the apple, bacon, and red onion? With an abundance of veggie, bacon, pork, and chicken options available, customers are able to try something different each time they visit.

Eric Shepard, Director of Marketing over at OTTO, explains further why he thinks their pizza stands out from the rest.

"We believe OTTO is an elevated pizza experience all the way around. Our artisan pizza puts a creative spin on a universally loved food. With unique signature pies, including our award-winning Mashed Potato, Bacon & Scallion, we have carved a niche in a market that is already rich with great pizza options."

Located right across from the Coolidge Corner Theater, even its location is quintessential for the heaps of professionals in the area. Since its grand opening in 2013, OTTO's Brookline location has become a staple for pizza lovers in the area. Whether it be picking up a pie for a lunch meeting, or grabbing a quick slice to-go, OTTO is sure to become one of your go-to spots for a quick and delicious lunch.
