Bike n Barre Blends Spinning and Barre Workouts for Cardio, Strength, Flexibility Improvement

By Kelly Church

Described as a high-energy fitness studio, Bike n Barre serves the Walpole, MA community with cycling, barre and yoga classes. Owner Amy DeFilippo said her studio is small enough to provide attention to each student so each person can achieve his or her goals.

"Our classes are small so the clients get individual attention if they need it," DeFilippo said. "Most important to us is the safety and secondary is to have fun. If you do not have fun, then you will not come back."

A single instructor in a dark room leads each spinning class. With the spotlight on the instructor, DeFilippo said this helps students feel more comfortable and not try to compete with one another, encouraging them to go at their own pace. Instructors will help adjust each person on their bike so they get the best ride.

"Our classes are difficult, but we tell everyone who is new to do what they can because it will come," DeFilippo said. "If you are new to spinning, I always say it takes about three to four classes to feel comfortable. I also say never get discouraged because spinning is hard, but such great cardiovascular exercise."

Barre classes work to elongate and strengthen the muscles with small movements. DeFilippo described these classes as "easy to follow," but instructors are there to help and guide each student through the movements. Mats and towels are provided, but attendees are welcome to take classes barefoot as well.

The studio also offers a specialty class that combines both spinning and barre. The Bike n Barre class combines cardio, strength training, flexibility and focus to a 60-minute workout.

DeFilippo said she opened her studio to provide clients who want to improve their health and fitness a sense of community. Students are motivated by positivity, their questions are answered and their concerns appeased.

"I have been to many studios and gyms [where] you feel out of place, but that is not the feeling at Bike n Barre," DeFilippo said. "If you want a place to go to get an unbelievable workout and feel like part of a community, then Bike n Barre is your studio."
