Bringing the Flair of San Fran's Mission District to Cambridge with MexiCali Burrito Co.

By Elisha Neubauer

Massachusetts is known for its universities, its history, and its...Mexican food? Not something you would think of when you think of the New England state, but exactly what MexiCali Burrito Co. set out to change when they opened their brightly colored doors.

The brightly painted eatery aims to recreate the San Francisco Mission District right here in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts. "The decor is inviting, casual and bright," describes Eric Quadrino, the Owner of MexiCali Burrito Co. "The restaurant is a sunshine yellow to let people know it's a fun place to eat. There are old posters on the walls and murals from local artists." But this unique restaurant attempts to emulate more than just the appearance of the famous SanFran district.

They've also kept in line with the eating trends of the area. "We are a California style burrito shop," Quadrino tells us. "We have a large emphasis on health conscious ingredients and a seasonal menu. We also have daily vegetable selections."

This health consciousness translates into their menu in every way, making it a fantastic option for vegetarian patrons. "We have a tremendous amount of vegetarian options," Quadrino boasts. He continues, explaining that MexiCali produces four daily vegetables which alternate depending on the seasonality of the produce cycle. All beans, rice, soups and salads are also considered vegetarian friendly. "You can make anything on our menu vegetarian friendly by simply not adding a meat," he states.

One of the best things about the MexiCali Burrito Co? Everything, and I mean everything, is homemade onsite. They also offer a free salsa bar with enough options to keep everyone happy, as well. Even the names of their menu choices are fun, with things like Tangy Tomatillo, Habanero Heat, and The Big Sur.

The only thing rivaling their menu is their service. The employees seem to really enjoy their job and share the same passion for high quality, fresh, healthy foods. Couple the exciting menu and excellent service with the unique, eclectic atmosphere provided by the modern architecture, and you've got a winner that makes lunch time an escape from the office and a venture to the shores of Cali.

For those who want to take the MexiCali experience home to their next event, MexiCali Burrito Co. offers catering off-site. They do request at least one day prior notice for your event, but have a wonderful menu selection for those looking to take the Cali party home with them. Options include make-your-own tacos and fajitas, burrito box lunches, tasting platters, burrito platters, and several dessert options.
