Building Confident Communities in the Greater Boston Area with Boston Acting Classes

By Paul Rowe

Teaching and coaching the craft of acting is an important practice, one that uplifts the artistic spirit of entire communities. For over fifteen years now, Boston Acting Classes has conducted group workshops and private acting classes in their very own studio in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Becoming a seasoned actor is a difficult process; one that not just anyone can achieve. Actors must consistently interact with other actors and put on a believable performance in front of demanding audiences. Boston Acting Classes supports the needs of up-and-coming artists in both group and one-on-one settings. It all begins in the Intro to Acting classes, one of the studio's most popular classes.

"In this class we start from the standpoint that nobody in the class has any experience or knows anything about the craft of acting. We've had people from eighteen years old all the way up to eighty-six learn about acting for the first time," say teachers Art and Amanda Hennessey. "Many people attend who are not looking to become professional actors, but may have always had in interest in how actors work. Some people attend to help them get more experience with public speaking or being in front of an audience."

The main goal of this course is to make learning the craft fun and to create a relaxed atmosphere where actors can listen to, and learn from, one another in meaningful ways. While this is absolutely essential for beginning actors, many experienced actors take all different levels of training. Many of these individuals have acted or trained many years ago, and are chomping at the bit to re-immerse themselves in the craft they are so passionate about.

"Our Scene Study class is where you will find some highly trained actors and actors that are currently working on stages and on television or feature films," say Art and Amanda Hennessey. "These are very intense classes in which you are performing scenes and then working them with guidance and feedback from us, using our experience as trained and currently working actors as well as having directed for years.

Coaching comes in a variety of forms at Boston Acting Classes. Actors have the option to perfect their audition skills or prepare for specific roles for projects ranging from local plays to feature films. Amanda Hennessey's company Boston Public Speaking goes above and beyond traditional acting preparation, assisting clients with everything from Ph.D. defenses to pitches to venture capital investors.

What are the ultimate benefits for the uninitiated? Exploring the craft of acting can help you comfortably perform in front of any audience. Getting in touch with characters that act on their passionate beliefs help Bostonians become efficient presenters and leaders in their communities.
