Choosing the Right Designer For Your Dream Home: An Interview with Marc J. Pearlman of Newbury Kitchens & Baths

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

After many years running a successful construction company (primarily institutional and commercial buildings), I felt the need to utilize my education and on-site experience in a second career. So I started a kitchen and bath design company with an emphasis on European imported products.

What are some of the services your company provides?

Design, construction and construction management services. We offer the latest in today's technology by providing virtual walk-throughs , color renderings, lighting design, visualizations and material/product consultations and recommendations.

In your opinion, what are three qualities that every design company should possess?

a) A thorough understanding of the construction process.
b) Detailed knowledge of the products used including appliances and other related accessories.
c) The ability to think "outside the box" for new and functional solutions to existing conditions and design challenges.

If you could describe your ideal client/interior designer relationship, what would it be and why?

A relationship where each party has the ability to listen, understand and communicate, keeping in mind the goal of learning the needs, aspirations and limitations from each other.

As an interior designer, how do you make sure you're understanding of what your client wants?

By repeating back your understanding of what you heard both in words and visualizations.

What are at least three questions every homeowner should ask their interior designer before hiring them?

a) Provide the names and contact information of the last three (3) clients.
b) Provide information on three (3) or more of successful projects that illustrate your ability to solve unusual conditions.
c) Cite projects that you were successful in maintaining the budget and time constraints.

What is your philosophy behind creating dynamic, yet balanced spaces for your clients?

Understanding your clients' lifestyle and family interactions and how your design solutions address these issues.

What are some minor building renovations that can really improve the appearance of my home?

The selection and use of materials, colors and lighting.
