Clean carpets last longer, and what better way to ensure the longevity of your flooring then by getting them cleaned regularly in an environmentally-friendly way to boot?
George F. Czyzewski, owner of Airfresh Cleaning Systems in Springfield, Mass., oversees a company which uses 95 percent less water and fewer chemicals in carpet and upholstery cleansing. He points out there are several reasons people should get their carpets cleaned on a regular basis, reasons which can tie directly into your health.
"Contrary to what people think, studies show that carpets are the best floor surface for indoor air quality provided they're vacuumed regularly and professionally cleaned at least once a year," Czyzewski said. "Even tiny dust particles can act as tiny razor blades cutting and tearing carpet fibers. This causes the carpet to wear out faster, resulting in having to replace carpet sooner than you would like. And if you or your children have allergies, regular cleanings will help prevent flare-ups due to dust mites."
A drier, low-moisture method is what generally works best for Czyzewski, which only takes 2-3 hours to complete. This all-natural, biodegradable method uses less water, meaning there is no waste water to get rid of, and fewer chemicals.
"There are many different cleaning methods, but there is no one absolute best 100 percent of the time," he said. "They all have strengths and weaknesses."
Once method Airfresh Cleaning Systems will not use, Czyzewski said, is a truck-mounted hot water extraction. This method can use 500 gallons of water a day, which equates to 2,500 gallons a week, 10,000 gallons a month, and so on.
"That is contaminated water that has to be disposed of, and in times of water shortages, that is a lot of precious water that is wasted when there is an alternative," Czyzewski said. "We have the alternative."
