Contractor Screening Tips: Featuring New Looks Home Improvement

By Kristen Bosse

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

We started as a painting service in 1998. Over the years, I grew to love everything about providing service to customers. Seeing happy smiles when we meet our customers' needs makes me want to step up our skills and offer more services. Today, New Looks Home Improvement offers a full range of services, from foundation repairs to kitchen and bathroom remodeling. We also have a Design Center and offer products customers can purchase for remodeling projects.

What are some of the services your company provides?

We offer a full range of interior and exterior home improvement services and help customers through the entire improvement process, from brainstorming the design for a new project to completing renovations and repairs. We offer many services, but some of our most popular are kitchen/bathroom remodeling projects, handyman services, electrical repairs, deck construction and repairs, painting, and masonry.

What is the basic process you use when screening new contractors to recommend?

We ensure contractors are fully licensed and insured, and also have the skills and craftsmanship needed for the job.

What are 3 to 5 things you look for in a superbly qualified candidate?

One thing that I look for in a candidate is evidence of responsibility. They have to have a good driving record and no record of substance abuse.

What are some examples of bad contractor behavior that may steer you away from suggesting them and backing their credibility?

Not showing up on time, calling in sick, or no motivation are all examples of bad contractor behavior.

What questions do you suggest homeowners ask their contractors before hiring them?

Homeowners should ask contractors if they are licensed and insured, how long they have been in business, and ask for references before signing a contract.

When should homeowners discuss prices and payments with their new contractor?

Homeowners should discuss prices and payment options after they've had a chance to review the quote or contract and have received a copy of the contractor's license and insurance.

What do you believe is the best way to tell of a contractor's worth? (i.e. testimonials, their website, face-to-face interacts, Yelp scores, personal recommendations etc.)

I have to say your first impression, the feeling you get when a contractor presents themselves to you, will say a lot about that contractor's worth.

Is there any other tips you have for homeowners who are screening new contractors?

Aside from what we discussed above, make sure you have all your critical questions answered before signing a contract. Also, make sure the contract is consistent with the answers given to your questions.

What is the best way for people to get in contact with you?
