Coolidge Corner Guest House: A Great Home Base in Boston

By Marina I. Jokic

Shawn and Jessica are the owners of this quaint bed and breakfast situated in Brookline, Massachusetts and they tell us why it's worth visiting. The Coolidge Corner Guest House is a historic site, a Victorian house that was transformed into a warm and welcoming inn which provides great amenities to its guests and a central location within minutes to downtown Boston.

Brookline itself is a great place to stay and explore, and it has something for everyone -- from unique entertainment options, excellent restaurants to please any palette to many a shopping opportunity and a short walk to Boston's renowned Fenway Park. The neighborhood's famous, restored art deco movie theater attracts locals and tourists alike.

From a residential standpoint, the area, although quite pricey, is very popular among families with its parks and playgrounds, excellent school district, and a small-town feel within an urban setting. It's also convenient for those looking to spend the night close to their loved ones in the Longwood Medical Area.

More to the point though, Jessica tells us that the Inn's history essentially started around the 1980's when her husband's family bought the place, moved into the first floor apartment and decided to convert the rest into a homeless shelter. The shelter continued operation until the 1990's after which it underwent its final renovation and opened as an inn. Shawn and Jessica took over in 2009.

When asked about the significance of the history of Coolidge Corner and whether it's popular these days to stay at a B&B, they add that "a bed and breakfast is a great choice for a traveler in Brookline, since the owners and staff can give you the best advice on what to do locally and still make the most of a visit to the city."

You get to escape the generally hectic atmosphere of downtown Boston without giving up urban conveniences and a central location. Also, your stay at this bed and breakfast comes at a reasonable price and includes a hearty breakfast featuring fresh bagels from Kupel's Bakery. Furthermore, when asked what sets them apart from most other B&B's, they confidently emphasize that "we stand out because we offer top-notch service at economical price points."

What is more, each room at the inn is unique- it can appeal to the student traveler but also to the romantic couple. The owners really know Brookline and Greater Boston as their families have lived here for generations: "Our family has a long history in Brookline and Boston. Both of our fathers were lifelong Brookline residents and actually went to the same elementary school our children will attend, and we're always happy to share that expertise with our guests," they add. It's apparent now why the B&B business has flourished here, and why Coolidge Corner Guest House is a place worth visiting.
