Cultural Eats Right in Brookline: Featuring Paris Creperie and Taberna de Haro

By Kristen Bosse

Step into Brookline's historical area, and you might feel like you're stepping back in time. With countless shops and restaurants dating back to when JFK resided on Beals Street around the corner, it is no wonder it's become the hub of the town. For years, this cozy neighborhood has been known for housing a diverse and vigorous community. Although best known for its Jewish inhabitants and cuisine, many restaurants from differing cultures have recently set up shop. "Paris Creperie" and "Taberna de Haro" both have made a name for themselves in Brookline's bustling hub. While "Paris Creperie" can satisfy your appetite for French food, "Taberna de Haro" can send your taste buds into a frenzy with their tapas and extensive wine list.

Paris Creperie

While most French food has become increasingly popular over the years, it is safe to say that crepes are one of America's favorite selections. It is no wonder that Owner Chuck Silverton decided to open a restaurant serving solely crepes right in the heart of Coolidge Corner. Students and professionals alike agree that this is the perfect spot to grab a quick and delicious bite. Jack Ludden, the General Manager of Paris Creperie, was nice enough to discuss why he believes his customer's love his crepes so much!

"Variety is the spice of life! Our guests are delighted by our Parisian themed decor and offerings. We try to make it an experience rather than just a meal- you're transported to a different place when you visit our cafe."

In fact, the dishes of "Paris Creperie" have become so popular that they recently decided to open a food truck featuring their famous creations! Nowadays, food trucks have become the new rage when it comes to fast and easy eats. Their decision to take advantage of this market was an ingenious plan. Ludden comments again on their decision to open the truck. "There were no crepe trucks on the road in Boston at the time despite successful crepe trucks existing around the country elsewhere. It was a good way to increase our presence in various parts of the city and bring our crepes to people who don't frequent Coolidge Corner!"

Taberna de Haro

"Paris Creperie" is not the only restaurant to be so bold as to introduce a new type of cuisine to the Brookline area. "Taberna de Haro" is most commonly described by its customers as a true trip back to Spain for all of your senses. Whether it be the festive décor, or the traditional Spanish wine, Taberna encompasses all things necessary for a night spent eating and laughing with friends. Here is an exclusive look into the history of Taberna from Owner and Head Chef, Deborah Hansen.

"I opened Taberna de Haro so I could be an ambassador of sorts for the food and wine of Spain. I lived in Madrid for 8 years so I am passionate about Spanish cuisine and viniculture. I knew I wanted to make completely authentic dishes and not food dumbed down for timid palates. I also knew I wanted to create a huge wine list that people would be excited about. Such risks required a progressive, well-traveled community, and I chose Brookline."

Deborah also commented on the fact that she has seen Brookline's level of adventurous eating steadily increase over the years. Now with 188 positive reviews on Yelp!, it seems that Brookline has fully embraced this Spanish gem. If you are so bold as to try some of her authentic dishes, be sure to get a taste of some of her personal favorites! The Arroz Negro, or black paella, is made with generous amounts of squid ink to both color it black and give it a rich texture. If you want to start with something tamer, try the Piquillo Peppers, which are stuffed with a salt cod and potato puree. If you are curious of the other selections, be sure to stop by and take a look at the huge menu!

Whether it is sweet and savory crepes, or sampling Spanish tapas and wine, Brookline has something for everyone's tastes. While these two restaurants have become local favorites, be sure to check out all that Brookline has to offer by taking your own visit!
