Weddings and bar trivia nights may not have much in common, but Michael O'Neill has become a popular host for both. These career choices might be traced to his interest in drama during his school days, when he performed as the carnivorous plant in Little Shop of Horrors. He comes from a theatrical family, and says that his code of life is "try not to be annoying." He has succeeded so well at this that his services are constantly in demand.
O'Neill's trivia and wedding DJ services have grown to the point that they can be described as an empire. In typical low-key fashion, he explains "We do two things, trivia and weddings. We provide trivia for bars and restaurants weekly, and for corporate / school / organization events. We also provide DJ services for weddings primarily. We are low-key in our approach, nothing cheesy. Trivia at weddings is not recommended."
How was he inspired to get into this line of work? He started DJ'ing in high school, at Framingham South, and "Got involved with trivia in Atlanta in 1996, spending the Summer there for the Olympics. For the last ten years, I've also been a DJ for the Boston Bruins, DJ'ing / mixing for games in control room and mobile events."
O'Neill has been DJ'ing weddings for twenty-five years and finds time to host about thirty each year. His referrals are mostly through word of mouth, and he guarantees that he will be personally present at every event from start to finish. He is based in Boston but will travel throughout New England for events.
His style is low-key; there's very little talk and no bad jokes, games or props; just excellent, top-of-the-line music equipment and a music collection that covers "just about everything from the 40's through today's newest." Clients can choose their entire playlist or just a few songs, based on which he will compose a play list. It's about "the right music, at the right time, song after song."
Clients report that O'Neill's professionalism makes it easy to plan weddings, even from the west coast. He has a list of preferred vendors in photography, catering, planning, floral design and venues to help clients plan the perfect event.
O'Neill is also a popular bar trivia host at locations across central Massachusetts, greater Boston, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and California. With weekly trivia events scheduled, this is probably someone who really knows it all. He has been writing trivia for twenty years, and recently published a book, Best Bar Trivia Book Ever.
