Don Muller Gallery Delights With Local Artist Specialties

By Pamela Sosnowski

You'll never know what you'll find at dmg in downtown Northampton. Open since 1978, the gallery has expanded through the years to include jewelry, glass, wedding gifts and more, primarily made by American artists. Owner Maya MacLachlan currently displays and sells the work of 300 artists, and took the reins after its original owner, Don Muller, retired in 2012.

"The gallery has been in business for nearly 40 years, serving the Pioneer Valley and beyond with unique, handcrafted jewelry, glass, and gifts," she said. "I showcase over 300 artists from all over the US. The merchandise I carry includes jewelry (fashion and fine), art glass, home goods, and gifts, as well as a comprehensive line of bridal jewelry including engagement rings and wedding bands."

The items are sold both in-store and online and although they are considered museum quality, they range in prices that accommodate all tastes and budgets. Current collections include colorful vases by glassmaker Gary Bodker, intricately cut wooden wall clocks from Sarah Mimo, and freshwater pearl pendants by Jane Bohan. Virtually every piece is a one-of-a-kind item to be treasured for generations, whether given as a gift to someone else or yourself. As MacLachlan explains, she has no difficulty in finding artists that want to be featured at DMG.

"I discover new artists at different wholesale shows and sometimes the artists contact me directly," she said. "I primarily represent American artists in the store. I represent a good number of local artists too, which is a great way to connect with the community I live in and love."

For engaged couples, the store sells engagement rings and wedding bands and also specializes in sourcing white and colored diamonds and a variety of precious gemstones. Loose diamonds start at quarter carat size and are certified by one of several certified grading laboratories. The gallery also sells several watches in unique designs crafted of eco-friendly wood, metal, and other natural materials.

DMG's online store, launched in 2015, has introduced the gallery's selections to customers all over the country. MacLachlan offers free in-store pick up for local customers and free standard shipping on all jewelry orders. To introduce the community to the gallery's changing varied collections it hosts several events throughout the year including several bridal and jewelry trunk shows and participating in Northampton's annual downtown trick or treat on Halloween.

After working with Muller for 12 years, it was MacLachlan's dream to surround herself with unique art, help talented artists succeed, and satisfy customers. With dmg she's been able to accomplish all three.

"I've been at the gallery for 17 years and I am happy and grateful for what I get to do everyday," she said. "I love talking with customers and helping them find just the right thing, whether that is a wedding gift, an engagement ring or a piece of jewelry for a special occasion. I love discovering new artists and having the opportunity to bring their beautiful handcrafted work to my customers. The gallery has a lot to offer; from gifts to bridal to jewelry repairs and custom design, we've got it all!"
