Expanding Your Current Home Insurance Coverage: An Interview with Jeannie Razzaboni of Lattanzi Insurance Agency

By Jeannie Razzaboni

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Lattanzi Insurance Agency was established in 1974 by Peter P. Lattanzi. As a family owned insurance agency, current owner Peter P. Lattanzi Jr has continued the company philosophy of bringing businesses, families and individuals the very best insurance products combined with exceptional personal service. As an independent insurance agency, we represent the countries top insurance carriers for both personal and commercial insurance products.

"Protect what you value" is our philosophy. We can tailor an insurance program for our clients that will maximize available discounts while taking into consideration unique situations. Asset protection is the underlying focus of our plans. The majority of our new policyholders come to us as referrals - the ultimate seal of approval from our existing clients.

What are some of the services your company provides?

For personal insurance, we offer a wide range of policies for Auto, Home, Rental, Umbrella, Flood, Boat and Classic Car Insurance. For commercial insurance, we offer various lines of insurance such as Commercial Liability, Property, Automobile, Workers Compensation and Commercial Umbrella Insurance.

Please briefly explain the idea of home insurance to our readers, what it is, why it is important, etc.

Insuring one of your biggest assets correctly should be a top priority. Home Insurance is necessary to provide structure coverage for your home, contents coverage and liability protection. Home Insurance responds when you experience an insured loss such as a fire or theft. Your policy can also cover additional living expenses when your home is damaged and uninhabitable. Our policies offer replacement costs on dwellings and belongings. We can also offer a policy with additional coverage such as water backup from a sewer and identity theft protection. We have excellent jewelry blanket policies that protect your valuable assets on a blanket basis (which means that you won't need to schedule every piece). Liability protection is the cornerstone of a quality program and we will address your liability limits and individual needs taking an approach that looks to protect your assets.

Is coverage for my personal possessions usually included in a standard home insurance policy? Why or why not is it a good idea to consider this coverage?

Coverage for your personal possessions is included in a standard home insurance policy. It is important that you insure your contents on a replacement cost basis. After a loss, you want to be able to replace your items at today's dollars without being penalized for depreciation.

What is usually covered by the "additional living expense" coverage?

Additional living expense on your home insurance policy can pay for the additional costs of living that are incurred should you be temporarily displaced from your residence while it is uninhabitable. These expenses can include rent, hotel stays, restaurant meals and storage fees.

What is the importance, if any, of getting liability insurance? What can happen if I don't have this coverage?

Liability coverage on your home insurance policy can protect you against a claim or lawsuit resulting from bodily injury or property damage to others. For example, if a visitor were to be injured by slipping on an ice covered walkway on your property, you may be held legally responsible. If you were found negligent, the personal liability portion of your home insurance will respond to cover the damages resulting from the injury. Not having liability coverage could mean you personally could be responsible for defending a lawsuit brought against you and satisfying a judgment rendered in that lawsuit.

Do you have any other tips for someone who is considering expanding their home insurance policy?

Talk to an independent insurance agent that represents multiple insurance companies. Keep in mind that the cheapest plan may not be the best. For example, I have commonly reviewed policies for prospective clients that are inadequately insured for personal liability. They may have $100,000 or $300,000 in liability protection coverage. They are looking to insure a home that is worth more then their own liability protection. For minimal premium cost liability limits can be increased to 1 million. Your home may be the largest purchase you make in your life. It is important to adequately protect your home, contents and personal liability. Discuss a plan that fits for you.
