Experience the World through Art at R. Michelson Galleries

R. Michelson Galleries, the largest commercial art gallery in western Massachusetts, has a close relationship with some of the most prestigious museums in the U.S., including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Many works first exhibited at R. Michelson eventually make their way to these prominent museums.

"Our sculptors have created some of our nation's major memorials, from the FDR Memorial in Washington D.C. to the National Anne Frank Memorial in Boise, Idaho," Assistant Manager Elana Chernick-Kritz said.

R. Michelson's current collection includes oil paintings by the late landscape artist Thomas Locker (1937-2012), acrylic-on-paper master Mark Curtin, and abstractionist Oriole Farb Feshbach. There are many other well, and not-so-well-known, artists contributing paintings, illustrations, sculptures, photographs, and books to the gallery making for an eclectic and engaging assortment.

"The diverse collection features nationally and regionally prominent artists with an emphasis on realism, expressionism and children's book illustration," Chernick-Kritz said.

The gallery's diverse subject matter is appealing to older and younger audiences, aiming to make each visit as informative, inspirational, and educational as possible. In addition to artwork, R. Michelson Galleries offers a variety of services such as custom picture framing, art conservation, and appraisals.

"We strive to offer our clients a one-stop shop for all of their art-related needs," Chernick-Kritz said. The custom picture framing options range from basic and inexpensive protection to highly customized designs. Period reproductions are also available in a variety of finishes including 22-karat gold leaf, as well as multi-angle, double-sided, and oversized frames.

One of the gallery's other popular services is conservation, which restores all kinds of artwork through cleaning, patching up holes and tears, stabilizing and repainting. Fine art packaging and shipping in the U.S. and internationally is also available, equipped with full insurance and custom-made crates. The gallery can install your art work, offering expert placement advice for single-piece, grouping, or larger projects.

When it comes to selecting the artists they want to showcase, the gallery is very discerning while striving to represent a diversity of styles and mediums. In fact, R. Michelson has maintained enduring relationships with most of their artists, some for over 30 years, which sometimes makes it challenging to accept new artists.

"However, we always like to know what's out there and available," Chernik-Kritz said. The art world is constantly changing, and R. Michelson manages to capture that variation through a web of art works that encapsulate our zeitgeist.
