Expert Tips to Help Save You Money on Your Move: An Interview with Jorge Menjivar of J and J Movers

By Jorge Menjivar

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

J & J Movers is a family-owned and run moving company. We opened in 2007 and consider ourselves blessed to have met and successfully moved thousands of people into their new homes and offices. We have even loaded families' belongings when they move overseas. We earned an A+ rating on the BBB and testimonials are available on our website.

We have teams for almost every situation; men that are experienced with moving a full home from packing to unpacking, crews who move only heavy items and perform hoists and others who move small offices or single pieces. We are also very experienced with helping the elderly move. Our most rewarding moves are helping people who are already stressed out and need us to simply do our job so they can have one less thing to worry about on that day.

What is one of the most expensive costs when it comes to moving?

If you choose a full move, where a moving company packs for you, moves your belongings, and unpacks, it will be the most expensive. If you do hire for a full move plan it over two or three days. Ask your movers to pack on day one and move on day two. This way the men are well rested for the physical move.

Is there anything that people can do to help reduce that cost?

You can cut your moving costs in half if you pack your own belongings. Disassemble your standard furniture; ex., beds, dining room table and mirrors from dressers. Make sure you put the nuts, bolts or screws somewhere you will be able to get to right away at your new home. I would recommend keeping them in your car. It is also helpful to complete all boxing and labeling before moving day, move small fragile items before the move if possible and disconnect washers and dryers.

Do most moving companies offer any discounts?

Most moving companies will offer a discount if requested. You can search the web for a coupon code and you can ask about senior, veteran and repeat customer discounts. The worst they can say is "No."

Can you briefly talk about getting a moving estimate and the best way to decide which company to choose?

There are three ways to request an estimate: by phone, email or onsite. Accurate estimates can be obtained by email or phone for 2 bedroom apartments/houses or less. If you live in a 3 bedroom apartment or house plan for an onsite estimate. Any local reputable company will provide one for free. It should be scheduled at your convenience. If you have to jump through hoops to get the person to your house that is not a good sign of how your will be treated on moving day.

What advice do you have for someone who needs to move but has a limited budget?

If you are on a budget tell your contact person during the estimate process. Every company should be willing to work with a budget. You may be eligible for a discount. Your contact will forward the information to your moving team so they know when to stop loading items at your current home. You might end up needing to bring small items on your own or some boxes, etc., but if they are aware of your budget they will load your heaviest items first.
