Floor Maintenance Basics

By Malcolm Rivers

Flooring can be very important to the value of a home. If you don't take care of your flooring, it can diminish the value of your home, contribute to other maintenance problems, or create potentially hazardous conditions. There are three types of flooring that this article is going to address: tile flooring, carpet and hardwood floors. First up is tile flooring.

Tile

Tile flooring is composed of ceramic tiles arranged in a pattern on the floor. Ceramic tiles have particular requirements to keep the ceramics safe from damage when cleaning. One thing to keep in mind is that its important not to use cleaners with acid, bleach or wax based or oil based cleaners. Another important practice is to sweep and vacuum before attempting any cleaning. When you encounter broken or cracked tiles on your tile floor its crucial to have them removed or repaired by a professional. Do not try to repair or remove tile yourself and avoid the areas where the tiles are cracked or broken to avoid injury and further damaging the tile.

Carpet

Taking care of carpet flooring is obviously very different than taking care of tile or wood flooring. Because the floor is covered by materials of different types which more easily retain stains and smells, its important to know the differences between cleaning and maintaining carpeted floors and other types. Soil can become embedded in the material of your carpet, its crucial to vacuum regularly to avoid the problems created by the embedded soil. The type of carpet you have will dictate which vacuum mechanism you should use: rotating brush, a beater bar or suction. Find out which type you have and use the appropriate mechanism. Finally, never pull on loose carpet threads, cut them with scissors. Pulling on loose carpet threads may damage the carpet further, so cut them, carefully.

Hardwood

Hardwood floors are expensive, beautiful, elegant and sensitive. This type of floor can require some particular means of maintenance so be sure to understand the differences in how to maintain hardwood floors as opposed to other types. Make sure to wipe up spills immediately and vacuum or dust mop the floors once a week or more. Keep the floor from excessive amounts of direct sunlight and try to keep humidity low whenever possible.

Keep in mind that these are just some tools and concepts for handling different types of flooring. Floors are expensive and important, keep them clean and in good condition using these techniques. As always, do your own research when considering how to clean and maintain your various types of flooring. Good luck.

People use to prefer any of the tree above mentioned flooring these days. We have hardwood flooring in our house just because it looks pretty and require less maintenance.<br
