FMC Ice Sports Offers Truly Cool Ways to Enjoy Skating

By Pamela Sosnowski

Even though New England is notorious for its winter nor'easters, a winter cold enough to safely ice skate is not always a guarantee. So when Mother Nature isn't cooperating or if one needs to beat the summer heat, Pembroke-based FMC (Facility Management Corporation) Ice Sports offers skating and hockey lessons year-round for people of all ages. The company operates ice arenas in 24 locations throughout Massachusetts, making it the largest public manager of ice skating venues in the country.

"Ice skating and ice sports are great ways to have fun, stay fit, and make new friends," Mary Polleys, the company's marketing manager, said. "As a proud member of your community, FMC Ice Sports wants skating to be a positive experience in your life and we've designed a variety of quality and affordable opportunities for all ages and abilities to introduce ice skating to newcomers or allow existing enthusiasts follow their passions."

Both the skating and hockey programs offered by FMC are available to students as young as three years old and progress from learning how to skate all the way to the opportunity to compete in a skating exhibition or join a hockey league. In addition to lessons, each location hosts public skating events on a regular basis for only $5 admission. Some of the locations feature a DJ and neon lighting on Friday evenings during the summer. FMC Stick Time is also scheduled for hockey players to practice their skating and game skills.

The company has won several awards for its dedication to teaching the love of skating, particularly to younger skaters. FMC has been named a BostonParents Paper Family Favorite and is a Baystate Parents' Best of 2017 winner.

FMC's locations are also available to rent, making them the ideal venue for birthday parties and group outings. Several facilities also have private rooms available to enjoy a refreshments and birthday cake before or after skating. Most rooms can accommodate up to 20 guests.

"Parents can expect a clean arena with a friendly staff to cater to their needs," Polleys said. "Kids can expect to have a great time with their friends they won't soon forget, and maybe discover a lifelong hobby! The birthday child gets a special gift from us full of toys and other prizes."

This summer several of FMC's locations received renovations and facelifts to improve the overall customer experience. These included improvements made to parking and sidewalk areas, snack bars, restrooms, and even the skating rinks themselves. Customers' online reviews attest that FMC's locations are well maintained, clean, and feature friendly, encouraging instructors for the skating classes. All rinks are refreshed with a Zamboni machine on a daily basis, keeping the ice's surface smooth.

Polleys encourages anyone to visit a FMC arena and give skating a try at any time of the year.

"Skaters are so enthusiastic and because they're just learning to skate, we get to shape their experience, hopefully in a way that makes them want to keep learning and that skating becomes a lifelong hobby," she said. "Let an FMC Ice Sports ice arena near you help make ice sports a part of your life today."
