Focus Is on the Indie Music Scene at Brewster Productions

By Elisha Neubauer

Historic Plymouth is mostly known for its history and tourist appeal, but something else is creeping its way into the forefront of the residents' attention: indie music. Brewster Productions, who refer to themselves as a small, community-oriented event and media production company, is shaking up the coastal town with its unique spin of the local, independent music scene.

Launched by high school friends Scott McEwen, Jon Dorn, and Andrew Carleen, Brewster Productions is on a mission to help local musicians bring their work to the public of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The company, which was started in 2007, has been producing summer concerts in order to showcase budding talent, not just from the area, but from across the country as well.

"We started the company because, being 20 years old at the time, it was difficult to for our friends to get shows anywhere in the area," says Jon Dorn. "So we decided to help make it happen ourselves by starting a summer concert series." Now heading into their 9th season, Dorn says their focus still hasn't changed as they continue to concentrate on finding great artists from New England who want to share their original music.

Now, as they continue to gain popularity, they are able to showcase a variety of music styles. "With Acoustic Nights and the Barn Show Music Series, we showcase a range of original artists performing their own music," Dorn tells us. He goes on to say that Acoustic Nights features folk, pop, and indie music by solo artists and small bands while the Barn Shows feature similar artists, with the addition of full bands in the pop/indie/Americana genres. "Some featured artists in the past include: The Suitcase Junket, The Okay Win, Jake Hill & Deep Creek, Billington Sea, Eva Walsh, and Mark Whitaker," he states.

The three friends do more than just host local concerts of their own organization, though. They also offer sound production services for local race events. "We only produce concerts in the summertime. We love the lively spirit of Plymouth in the summer, and each year we just want to help contribute to that," explains Dorn. "The rest of the year, we produce commercial and music video projects with our sister company Four String Films and we provide announcing and sound service for road races."

Services include loud & clear announcements throughout the event, runners' names announced as they cross the finish line, high-energy, fun and family-friendly music throughout the event, awards ceremony hosting, live music booking and production, National Anthem singer booking, and event videography by Four String Films.

If you're interested in finding out more about Brewster Productions or the artists they work with, Dorn gave us a little tip on how to stay in the know. "We'll be posting our summer concert series schedules in April at www.brewsterproductions.com/concertseries and www.barnshowmanomet.com."
