Fresh, Local, and Exotic Seafood at 42 Degrees North

By S. Mathur

There are many ways in which to identify the 42 Degrees North Restaurant & Lounge in Plymouth, Massachusetts as the essence of a relaxed south shore style. It could be the outdoor bar and deck seating, the ocean breeze that makes even workdays seem brighter, the brightly colored cocktails that invite you to relax and unwind, the stuffed quahogs, the smell of a generous meal in preparation in the background. The official description of the food would be Creative American, with a unique twist to well-known favorites. But there is no doubt that the restaurant is all about the freshest fish.

In fact menus are planned around the day's catch, whatever fish that happens to be. General Manager Erik Hynes explains the special "Fish Market Menu": "The fish that we have on this unique menu changes every day and depends on things like season and availability but we guarantee that we'll be able to serve you something you have never had before (or maybe never even heard of) because as they say, there are plenty of fish in the sea and we try to give our guests as many fresh varieties as possible.

These fish can either be prepared to your specific liking (grilled, broiled, baked, blackened, fried, etc.) or you can try the chef's special preparation that he creates that evening. We never know what fish we will have on any given day until it gets dropped off in our kitchen before dinner, so the chef gets to be creative and have a little fun too!"

While the restaurant is focused on seafood, it also prides itself on able able to offer up some amazing cuts of beef. With a diverse menu that includes beef, pork chops, chicken, pasta, soups and salads, there's something for everyone and every mood. Some diehards will even admit to driving miles specially for the sweet and spicy cauliflower appetizer.

The decor is relaxed and beachy. Tanks of tropical fish and palm trees create a vacation feel. The restaurant is the newest of ten run by the Hynes Restaurant Group. The father and son team of founder Kevin Hynes and Erik Hynes have years of experience in south shore hospitality. The name is intriguing and a little misleading; the correct version would be (Almost) 42 Degrees North or 41.9186 Degrees North. Both of these and other similar were rightly rejected as being too cumbersome, and 42 Degrees North came into being. It is, in fact, located just a little south of the line. So set your GPS to 690 State Road, and make sure to call ahead for reservations.

One essential 42 Degrees North experience that Hynes recommends: "For new guests, we absolutely recommend dining outside on our deck or at our outside bar during the warm months. There is nothing like sipping some vino with a side of oysters under the warm sun with a cool breeze." See? The good life, south shore style, is really very simple.
