Fun, Unique Activities in Newton: Featuring The Dance Academy of Siagel Productions and Newton Squash & Tennis Club

By Kristen Bosse

Any Newton resident can vouch for the fact that their town is filled with an abundance of delicious dining options, family friendly activities, and bustling parks for everyone to enjoy. However, those that are tired of the norm may be looking to try something a bit different. Interestingly enough, Newton also has unique opportunities for those that are looking to branch out and try something new, fun, and ultimately an activity that can become a new part of their everyday lives!

The Dance Academy of Siagel Productions

For those that have a true passion for dance, The Dance Academy of Siagel Productions is the perfect spot for Newton residents to fully explore their variety of classes. With offerings such as ballet, jazz, tap, musical theatre, hip hop, break dancing, and even acrobatics, members always have a chance to experience something new. Not an experienced dancer yet? "No problem", says Erica Sperberg, Director at Dance Academy. "Our mission is to be a dance school for EVERY BODY, meaning you can come at any age or level and there will be a class that fits you." Whether you want to compete or dance as a hobby, there is a class that fits your specific needs. This unique structure of The Dance Academy is what makes it truly the quintessential stop in town for those looking for new, exciting activities.

Since its opening years ago, Sperberg has strived to provide a high quality dance experience for all of her students. The faculty is highly specialized in their particular genre of dance, and often still work on progressing themselves as an artist when they are not teaching in the studio. This genuine passion is passed down to their students, which creates the best environment for learning the true art of dance. Dance has the ability to be an extremely powerful force in the lives of children, teens, and adults alike. It instills a sense of confidence and belonging. Dancers build life-long relationships with the friends that they perform with and the teachers who inspire them along the way. Especially when kids enter their teenage years, dance becomes an escape from the crazy stress in their lives.

Dance requires creative thinking and self-expression, but also demands physical strength, discipline, and dedication. "I feel that the kids who show true dedication and excellence at any activity through high school, go on to be the most successful adults", Sperberg claims. "Dancers stand out from the rest because they have an artist within them, that combined with self-discipline and skill, makes them truly stellar at any endeavor they choose to pursue." Dance is often seen as an activity that children and teens can do for fun in their free time with friends- and it is! However, dance also has the ability to change a person apart from the physical aspects, and teach them how to be a more motivated, determined individual. It is truly amazing that something as simple and fun as the art of dance can help shape a person's future.

Don't forget about their new early childhood program, Little Beats, which offers Music & Movement to babies and toddlers! Knowing how instinctually babies take to music, they developed a curriculum to use dance and music as a way to help little ones develop and get them benefiting from dance as early as possible. Not just because it's super cute, but because they truly believe they can help even the youngest babies grow while helping their parents create fun memories in the studio during this special time of life.

Newton Squash & Tennis Club

Originally founded in 1897 (feel free to take a moment to take in that date), the Newton Squash & Tennis Club is a private squash and tennis club owned and operated by its members and conveniently located in Newton Centre. Today, it is still the oldest squash and tennis club in the country with a continuous existence. With its major renovation in 2001, the club now consists of four clay tennis courts, two squash courts, a fitness area with strength and training equipment, and a men's and women's locker room. During the outdoor tennis season, the tennis courts are maintained daily to guarantee great playing conditions, and the squash courts are state of the art and conditioned to maintain consistency of play. With sports like tennis and squash, the quality of the courts is essential. The staff members over at the club are completely aware of this and strive to provide a quality facility for their members.

Barry Horwitz, Past-President of the NSTC, pointed out another unique aspect of their membership. "During tennis season, the club employs a tennis pro who is available for half-hour or hour long lessons. And during the squash season, a squash pro is available for private or small group lessons." The club also offers a personal trainer for members by appointment throughout the year. "We are a low-frills club that works best for members who like to play relatively frequently." The club is without a doubt a player's club- with no court fees, to encourage frequent play, and excellent quality facilities. It is open 365 days a year, so players can sleep easy knowing it is always open for them!

Just like the art of dance, there are many reasons apart from exercise that make tennis and squash great sports to learn. "Both provide great exercise, and you don't need to assemble a lot of people to play", Barry claims. "They are the kinds of sports one can play for many years- until late in life. We have several members in their 80's playing both sports at our club." The NSTC membership is a family membership that encourages all members of the family to play.

With a cap of 150 members, the club remains an intimate oasis for residents of Newton and surrounding towns that are truly passionate about tennis and squash. Those who have tried out the sport and want to make it a part of their daily routine, be sure to head over to this state-of-the-art facility now and apply for a membership before the warmer months head our way. Due to the club's popularity, there is currently a waiting list that will last at least a number of months. Better to get your name in sooner rather than later!
