Get Help Decorating Your Home: An Interview with Roberta Laprade of Coastal Styling

By Roberta Laprade

Tell us a little bit about your experience, company history and the services you offer.

When the doors were first opened of my home décor and furnishings shop, Enchanted Treasures in 2000, relationships were formed, styles were favored and features of my own home and those of my clients began to appear in national magazines such as Romantic Homes, Romantic Country, the international publication Jeanne d'Arc Living and the book 'Waterside Cottages'. Since that time, Coastal Styling is also Staging Homes to Sell.

What is a common misconception that people have about staging homes?

Staging homes is a 'less is more' design philosophy. The home is presented or 'staged' to appeal to the buyers who cannot envision themselves living in an empty space or in a home in need of depersonalizing and a fresh look. A staged home enables prospective buyers to make the all important emotional connection necessary toward the final decision to purchase. At Coastal Styling, we stage new builds, vacant houses or homes that are lived in while on the market. Staging coastal homes is our specialty!

As for decorating, here are a few suggestions if you want to be happy when walking in your front door and in the long run selling quickly and for the best possible price! Hire a designer with color expertise to avoid the costly mistake of fixtures and finishes that do not compliment one another.

What is one of the most common regrets homeowners have when it comes to interior design choices?

The biggest mistake that I see time and time again, are countertops and backsplashes that clash in kitchens and bathrooms! And, these are often chosen by the builder or the friendly in house decorator with no training in color undertones. The finishes and undertones don't work well, the wall color interferes even further and you are left feeling that something just isn't right but can't put your finger on it. Most people begin with wall color when in fact it needs to be the last thing chosen after fixtures, large upholstered pieces and rugs.

How should someone who wants professional help decorating their house start the process?

If you are selling your home, hiring a professional stager will save you in terms of the amount of time your house is on the market, in addition to a costly price reduction! We stage homes to sell primarily on Cape Cod and the south coast region of Massachusetts.

What is the best way for people to get in contact with you or your company?

Whether you are longing to love your home or sell your home, a decorator or stager can help in the process. Your home is your biggest asset. Make it work for you!
