Getting Professional Advice on Your Kitchen Remodeling Project: An Interview with Jay Sponenberg of Kitchen Associates

By Jay Sponenberg

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Kitchen Associates is a family owned business. My father Robert Sponenberg started selling and installing kitchens in the late 1950's and opened his first showroom in 1972. We specialize in cabinets and counters and installation of them. We have decades of experience in our company and work with a network of other people to help people make the kitchen of their dreams a reality.

Why do homeowners normally get their kitchens remodeled?

Several reasons. First and foremost they want an efficient beautiful kitchen to work in and entertain. However a well-functioning beautiful kitchen will also be a great investment. You typically will get back close to the total investment in a resale and it will also make your home more appealing for a potential buyer.

What are some of the most important decisions homeowners will need to make during the kitchen design process?

They need to decide what is most important to them in a remodeled kitchen (e.g. appliances, island, counter space, etc.) Getting a layout that will work for them is most important. The style and finish of the cabinets and counters would be next.

What are some ways to keep your kitchen remodeling project affordable?

If you can avoid doing any structural changes you can keep the cost down. Try and work within the existing confines instead of taking down walls and replacing and moving windows. Any wall you take down or change there is another side that has to be taken into account which will increase the cost. However, it is best to get a good, better, and best scenario for the layout and design before making a final decision.

What are some of the most popular products and styles/features that people are interested in?

Granite or quartz counters, white cabinets, multi colored kitchens (e.g. white cabinets with black or cherry island), farm house sinks; all these are big right now.

Do you have any advice to help make the kitchen remodeling process as enjoyable as possible?

Don't rush and plan early. If you want this done for the holidays, start planning now. It can take several weeks or even months to get a plan that works. Usually there is about a 6 to 10 week lead time to order cabinets so make sure you give a lot of thought and time for planning. Also the internet is great tool to help "scrapbook" your ideas. Sites like Houzz or Pinterest help people get their ideas and thoughts of what they like. This makes it easier to make decisions.
