Great Harvest Bread Co. Brings Wholesome, Whole Grain Loaves to Greater Boston

By Elisha Neubauer

Looking to toss away the suits and start something a little more hands on, Nicole Caron turned to the Great Harvest Bread franchise for inspiration. Operating under a 'freedom franchise' policy, Caron was able to run her business her way, the way that best benefitted the community she was ensconced in, while still having the support, product, and backing of the franchise.

"Great Harvest is a franchise which is based on the premise that we bake whole wheat breads from our flour that we mill in our bakery daily," states Caron. "I purchased the business after working in corporate America for ten years."

Caron liked the business concept offered by Great Harvest Bread and the idea that she could operate a very family friendly business of her own through the start up process offered by a franchise option. "We offer a variety of breads, sweets, sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches as well as a full Peet's coffee menu daily," she states. "We also do a lot of lunch catering which includes realtors' lunches."

Setting her shop in Lexington apart from competitors is what goes into each and every one of the products sold through Great Harvest Bread. "We use only the freshest and healthy ingredients in our breads and sandwiches," Caron tells us. "We are also very family oriented and the owner (me!) is in the bakery daily." These fresh and healthy ingredients are another perk of purchasing from Great Harvest. "We mill our own wheat flour and use only the freshest ingredients," she reiterates.

At Great Harvest, they have a saying, that they're making "Bread the way it outta be." If you're curious as to what they mean by this, don't fret. We asked. They use pure, simple ingredients and bake everything from scratch. The 100% whole grain flour is milled each and every day in-store. They believe in taking things slowly, preserving the nutritious element of the bread, instead of sacrificing it for quantity or speed.

"We still believe in our elaborately long, traditional methods of bread making because it naturally develops an exquisite flavor and texture with time, instead of relying on the use of additives," they state on their website. "Over the years, we have been able to adapt to the wants and needs of our customers and can offer great-tasting products fit for many diets, but since the inception of our bread-making business, one thing is still for certain -- Great Harvest bread is truly one-of-a-kind."

One of the biggest perks of buying from Great Harvest Bread is that you'll be helping to support family-owned farms, not big corporate operations. "We know our wheat farmers on a first-name basis," details their website. "They understand and produce our proprietary whole grains that have the baking qualities and hearty taste that are uniquely Great Harvest."
