Greater Boston's Plan To Rescue Our Animals

By Kristen Bosse

It's no secret that the people of America love animals, with most households housing one or two as pets for their family. However, various factors sometimes leave these same pets abandoned, battling with animal cruelty, or dealing with neglect. All of these together have created an overflow of animals that need shelter, veterinary care, and ultimately a loving home. This is where the Animal Rescue League of Boston steps in.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston

The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL) is a progressive animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing domesticated animals and wildlife from suffering, cruelty, abandonment, and neglect. The staff members and over 700 volunteers provide direct care to thousands of homeless animals each year through their adoption centers in Greater Boston. In addition, the ARL is the only welfare organization in Massachusetts that has an emergency rescue services team dedicated to assisting domestic animals and wildlife when they need it most. Last year, over 15,000 animals got the care and assistance they needed, when the needed it most, through ARL programs and services.

"When you adopt from a reputable shelter or rescue group, you give an animal a chance at a better life", says Ami Bowen, Director of Marketing and Development over at ARL. "At the ARL, all adoptable animals also receive spay/neuter services, a veterinary exam, behavioral screening, vaccines, and a microchip. Our staff helps match you with an animal that fits your lifestyle and household, and you have a place to call with questions after you bring your new pet home."

Apart from their adoption and rescue services, the Animal Rescue League of Boston offers an extensive line of animal care services as well. Their veterinary care provides a full-service clinic that can perform vaccinations, wellness examinations, dental care, and even surgery. Folks who adopted an animal from the shelter and brand new clients are both welcome to utilize this high-quality care!

Perhaps the most innovative service they offer is their Spay Waggin', which offers high-quality, affordable spay/neuter services to clients in financial need on the South Shore and Cape Cod. The mobile unit features a preparation area, a fully equipped surgical suite, and a recovery ward for up to 40 animals. The truck travels around the South Shore and makes monthly scheduled stops to perform surgeries on cats and dogs.

"When you spay or neuter your pet, you prevent animal homelessness", Ami claims. "So many of the animals coming into our shelters are from unplanned or abandoned liters of kittens and puppies. Two of the biggest reasons people give for not spaying or neutering their pet is "it's too expensive" and "haven't had the time." The Spay Waggin' works to overcome those two big challenges by offering affordable and easily accessible services."

Those interested in getting involved and helping the cause can choose from a variety of things including fostering, volunteering, donating money, attend one of their Boston events, etc. There is no limit to ways you can help as long as you are dedicated to improving the lives of these little animals.
