Helpful Tips for a Stress-Free Move: An Interview with Jodi Hawthorne representing John Palmer Moving & Storage

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a family owned and operated company, established in 1928. Services that we offer include: storage, packing, moving both locally, and with our Atlas Van lines affiliation also interstate. We have two storage facilities that are within 2 miles of each other. We offer a climate controlled storage facility in our 15,625 square foot warehouse in Concord, MA along with our warehouse in Acton, where our office space is, which is 27,930 square feet. We also offer record storage at a much lower price than what it would cost for a business to be taking up valuable square footage within a company's own office space. We have the ability to service the most complex multi tiered commercial moves, right down to something as simple as a person needing a few things moved around within their home.

What are some of the challenges that people face when they're moving to another home?

Moving is stressful. It can be overwhelming to a person when they're moving from a home that they've raised their family in. Not only because they are parting with their memories that they've created over the years, but also by the amount of things that they have acquired over the years.

What can they do to help prevent or solve those challenges?

Start the process early. Take on a little bit at a time, so as to not to get overwhelmed. We offer to our clients a very handy moving checklist, which explains step by step on the easiest way to get through the move.

If you needed to move, what steps would you take to make the process stress-free?

To minimize stress when it came to a move, I would try and be as prepared as possible. Preparation really is key when it comes to making the process to go as smoothly as possible. I would know that there are several layers when it comes to a move, don't leave things until last minute, that is when stress will mount the most.

Can you share one of the biggest regrets you've seen people have about their move?

I've had clients that have used us several times in the past decide on going with another moving company, because the other company's estimated charges came in lower than ours. Not only did they end up paying more than what they were estimated to pay, but they also have had damage to items in their move. They ended up calling on us to complete their move.

What are some things homeowners should look for in a moving company to ensure that their move will be as easy and stress-free as possible?

If the price on the quote sounds too good to be true, it probably is. In today's world there are lots of companies out there that make promises in which they just don't keep. Things to think about when you are choosing a mover; are they insured? Are they reputable? Do they have longevity? There are a lot of scams out there, so that is always something that you as a consumer have to account for.
