What's one of the biggest mistakes you've seen people make during the bathroom design and remodel process? What do you do to help homeowners avoid this mistake?

In any kitchen or bath renovation, it is our job to coach the homeowner through the process. Most family's complete one kitchen/bath remodel in a lifetime so they are understandably nervous about the process and the decisions that follow. The biggest mistake people make is not recognizing the scope of work involved in the project. Any contractor can access the site but they cannot see behind the walls. Therefore, it is important for homeowners to be prepared for those times when additional wiring or plumbing may be needed, or a section of floor is rotted and needs to be replaced. Most good contractors anticipate and plan for those events and, based on the contractors experience, those issues should be kept in check. Also, more importantly, a homeowner needs to stick to an agreed upon payment plan. They should not be paying up front for work that is not completed or material which is not at the job site unless they agree to order some items on their own.

We at JN Kitchens complete a Scope of Services plan for every job where construction is needed. The scope of services outlines exactly what work is to take place and who is responsible for each part of the job. It tells the homeowner the items they are required to supply as well as the work outlined for each of the sub trades and it outlines the cost and payment schedule. This is completed in draft form and reviewed by the homeowner and contractor several times before it becomes part of the final contract to be signed by all parties.

What are the basic steps of a bathroom remodel? Which one is the most involved and why?

The basic steps in a bathroom/kitchen remodel project are planning and understanding the realistic time for completion of a project. The home owner need to know the work process and they need to understand that in construction there are always going to be issues that come up which impact the project schedule. The general contractor tries to coordinate all aspects of the job but there are always things that happen ie. plumber gets an emergency call or the electrician takes longer than expected, the inspector does not show up on time so you can't proceed, etc. The home owner needs to be aware these things happen in every job so plan on it.

What are the most helpful things that people can do at the beginning of a bathroom remodel?

The most helpful things a person can do at the start of the job is to 1) make sure the area is accessible and ready for the contractor and they have picked out the items, and 2) they are supplying and have them ready for pick up or delivery to the job site.

What advice would you give a homeowner who wants to make the most of their budget for their bathroom remodel?

A home owner needs to be realistic about the size and scope of their project in order to make the most out of their budget. They need to think about all the little cost items not included in the construction such as soap dishes, towel bars, window treatments, which are part of the homeowners overall budget. They need to consider the bare bones costs verses the additional WANTS cost.
