Greater Boston's Premier Pest Control: An Interview with Bain Pest Control

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Bain Pest Control Service is a third generation family business. We are a full service company which provides service for all your general pests including ants, mice, rats, roaches, bed bugs, termites, birds, and nuisance wildlife. Our Commercial and Residential Quality Care Programs provide the proper protection at a reasonable investment.

How did you get into this line of work?

I started working at Bain when I was in college in 1990. Upon graduation, I worked in a soil analysis lab for about a year. I really missed the customer interaction that pest control provided so I returned to Bain and became the supervisor of the termite department and local sales representative. Today I am the Assistant Vice President and Senior Sales Representative.

What is the first thing someone should do once they suspect a pest problem in their home?

Call a professional. There are many pests like termites and carpenter ants that cause structural damage, or biting and stinging pests that can cause bodily harm.

When is the process of fumigation necessary on a home?

Fumigation involves tenting the home and applying a fumigant. In the Northeast, it is only used in extreme cases of powder post beetles, wood borers, and major bed bug infestations.

How do you know if you simply have a few spiders and ants around the house or your bug issue is a real problem?

In most cases, it takes a Pest Management Professional to inspect and determine the extent of the infestation.

What should homeowners be looking for in a qualified pest control company?

Make sure they have been in business for at least 5 years and have the proper licenses and insurance. Qualified companies should also have the proper certifications like being members of the New England Pest Management Association and Quality Pro/Quality Pro Green Certifications.

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Is there anything you believe you do better/different?

Our company has been in business since 1926 and has been owned by the Bain family since that time. Our management team has over 100 years of experience. Since we do not hire seasonal employees, our turnover rate is very low. Our customers are guaranteed to have an experienced technician performing their service.

We are the only Massachusetts based BedBugFREE certified company recognized by Since the outbreak of bed bugs, we have been leaders in the industry as far as research and establishing an effective and safe program for all of our customers. We also give informative seminars on how to protect yourself from bringing bed bugs into your home or work place. Being a full service company, we can provide our customers with protection against any pest. We have many other certifications including Quality Pro, Green Pro and Quality Pro School. We belong to many organizations including the New England Pest Management Association, Mass Lodging Association, Mass Restaurant Association, and Mass Affordable Housing Association.

Once the new homeowner moves in, are there any precautions they should take relating to pest control within the first couple weeks?

New home owners should always have a pest inspection by a Pest Management Professional. This would be in addition to a Home Inspection. PMP's are much more knowledgeable and experienced to locate and diagnose any pest issues.

I remember one story from a homeowner who said that a bat came into their house through the chimney and they couldn't get it out. They were of course rather scared to get too close to the animal. Do you offer emergency services just in case situations such as these happen in the middle of the night?

Yes, we offer emergency service when needed.

What are the most difficult kinds of projects?

Bed Bugs are the most physical and detailed projects. It may take 3-5 treatments depending on the level of infestation. For example, a typical 2 bedroom apartment takes two technicians between 1-2 each service.
