Premier Water Features Company of Massachusetts: An Interview with Bay State Aquascapes & Landscape Materials

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Bay State Aquascapes is a full service water feature business. We do everything from design installation, maintenance and makeovers for waterfalls, fountains, koi ponds, pondless waterfalls and large ponds. We also have retail products for do it yourselfers and we offer classes for people on the fence about water gardening. On a more local level we have a landscape material yard and supply mulch loam stone and other bulk landscape supplies.

What is your position at Bay State Aquascapes?

What are the benefits of including water features in my landscape?

I would have to say the biggest benefit of a water feature is the sound, it is instant relaxation. Whether you're working in the yard, just got home from a stressful day at work, or your 3 year old has just gone down for a nap, sit down near that sound for even 5 minutes and you begin to relax. Add to that fish swimming in a pond and you can get lost there just listening to the waterfalls and watching your fish glide effortlessly through the water.

Please explain your Rainwater Harvesting service.

The Rainwater Harvesting has been a great addition to our water features on several levels. The first is the "green" movement. Everyone is recycling now, cans, bottles, paper plastic, you name it its getting recycled. Typically rainwater runs off the roof through gutters and then is either channeled away from the house with pipe or discharged directly into the ground. We add downspout filters to collect the debris off the roof and then channel the water to a storage tank. The tanks are modular by design and can be fit almost anywhere. By incorporating a water feature along with the storage, we make sure 100% of the captured water is reusable. This is done through the simple process of circulating it and oxygenating it in the water feature. So a great way for people that are building green homes is to incorporate a rainwater harvesting system into their home designs. If the system is designed properly a significant amount of the rainwater can be used as irrigation, washing cars and even flushing toilets.

Other applications for the rainwater harvesting are to create sustainable water features. No need to top off your water feature with town water if Mother Nature will do it for you. The other issue we have used the Rainwater Harvesting system for is to correct drainage issues. We are able to design systems to ensure water travels away from problem areas and can be either reused or infiltrated back into the ground.

What makes your services different from other landscaping companies?

Our water feature business is strictly that. We design, install, maintain and educate everything water features. We know what we do and do it very well. We leave the other aspects of landscaping to the experts in each field. When customers want a patio next to their pond, we give them business cards of the patio guys. When they want landscape plants installed, we give them the business cards of the plant guys. And the same with landscape lighting, bridges, walls, you name it we have a referral for you. But we just do water features. That's also why we have landscape contractors hire us to build water features for their projects, because we are the experts in our field.

What are some of the benefits that come along with new landscape construction for your home?

I would say, as a homeowner, anytime you tackle a new project, either DIY or through a contractor you should be happy and proud to have it done. I know when we finish a new installation for a customer and we invite them out into the yard to look at the finished product its exciting. We typically have them come out and plug it in themselves. The look of amazement on how we can transform their yard from what it was into what it has become is such a great feeling. Even members of the crew stick around to see the waterfalls turned on, it's a real accomplishment. And that's how completed projects should feel, like an accomplishment either by you the homeowner in a DIY role, or a job well done by a professional contractor that you paid your hard earned money to complete. If its front yard landscaping, it could be a curb appeal, which always makes people take notice and if it's a water feature, you instantly have a reason to throw a dinner party to show off your water feature.

In your opinion, how much can a newly landscaped exterior increase the value of a home?

I would say that the only investment in a home that increases is the landscape. Think about it, your appliances are only new for a short period of time, and 6 months after you purchased and installed them, that model is already on clearance somewhere. The landscape grows and matures, and larger more mature landscape plants cost more than when you first had them installed. Stone work and hardscaping look more weathered and blend into the landscape better as they age. That's the look people are willing to pay for. So as long as the landscape is maintained it will grow the value of your investment.
