Quality Plumbing Services on a Budget: An Interview with Brothers P.H.A.C

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Brothers Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning has been proudly serving Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire for about 20 years. We offer a tremendous number of services, from small fixes, to major plumbing, heating, and air conditioning repairs or installations, high efficiency systems, and even automatic back-up generators. We focus on providing the best possible service and quality, while finding solutions to fit into every budget.

You seem to offer an enormous amount of services; would you pick any specific ones out as your specialties?

We specialize in customer service. That is our number one focus. As far as actual plumbing work, we specialize in high efficiency heating, cooling, and water heating options. We train extensively with the newest technologies to provide home owners with the most efficient repairs and installations possible.

What are some of the most innovative products you offer? Can these products really help you save on heating costs?

We offer heating and water heating systems that run up 98% efficient. That means for every dollar you spend, $0.98 is actually used to heat your home or hot water. Most older systems were originally rated for around 85% efficiency, but after all of these years, actually run in the 70% range. We offer a simple test to show where your existing heating or hot water systems are operating in terms of efficiency. We offer advice and suggestions that can help save on heating costs, but are actually free or low cost, and can be performed by the home owners themselves.

What are some key qualities a homeowner should look for in a qualified plumbing, heating, and cooling company?

Most importantly, check the license of every person working in your home. It is very important to make sure they have been the rigorous educational and apprentice programs that are required by the state. It is against the law for handymen to do any type of electrical or plumbing work unless they are licensed. It can result in major fines from the city or town that they live in, and if something terrible were to happen, even a refusal from their insurance company to cover damages. Always remember, you get what you pay for. If the price seems too cheap, you will get cheap work. That doesn't mean that the most expensive guys are the best. In the Greater Boston area, there are companies who use all of the flashy trucks and billboards and whatever else they can to lure people into paying almost comically absurd rates for their work. Ask a lot of questions to the person who comes to your house. Remember, they will be working in your home. It is very important to have a great relationship with them, and the more you know about them as people, the more comfortable you can feel having them working in your bathroom.

What should new homeowners be thinking about (related to plumbing, heating, and air conditioning) once they settle into their new home?

Find out what needs immediate attention. Have an inspection done by a licensed plumber and electrician. Home inspectors do a great job, but they may not recognize or see small issues that can lead to major problems later. Do not let it become overwhelming! Break your projects into three categories: Needs, Wants, and REALLY wants. Take everything one step at a time, and it will all come together without the headaches!

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Is there anything you believe you do better/different?

Our focus on customer relations and quality of work set us apart from our competition. We strive to be different and break away from the stereotypes of contractors. We schedule at your convenience, and will find some solutions to fit every person's budget. We want to be your personal contractor, and will do whatever we can to earn your trust!

What are some of your most difficult types of projects?

Service and repair in existing homes has its own unique set of challenges, but we wouldn't say any one job is more difficult than any other. Some projects require heavy lifting, some require finesse, and others require a lot of patience.

What are your favorite projects to work on?

We really enjoy installing high efficiency systems. The designs originate in Europe, where there is not a lot of space, and basements are not very common. Heating and hot water systems often times end up in the living space of a home, so they are made to be very compact and attractive. We try to treat these installations like art work, with a focus on symmetry and clean, deliberate lines created with the piping. It may sound silly, but it gives us a way to highlight one of the most important (and often ignored) systems in the home. We also enjoy the installation of emergency back-up generators. The systems themselves are really cool and fun to install.
