How to Conserve Energy: An Interview with Caron Electric

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a full service electrical, heating, air conditioning and generator company. If it runs off electricity we can work on it. Fully licensed and insured with the best warranty in the industry.

What are some common electrical mistakes homeowners make (some without even realizing it?)

Not maintaining equipment has to be the biggest mistake. What could have been prevented with some simple routine service turns into a costly repair/replacement. Preventative maintenance is not just to make sure the equipment works it is to keep it working at its best and catch small issues before the turn into bigger concerns.

Are there any electrical services people should have done or checked out on a regular basis?

Yearly service on your heating and cooling systems, preventative maintenance is very important. Also yearly check-up on your smoke detector system, it is one thing people don't think of until it's too late. Lastly you should check your electrical service both exterior and interior for rust as water penetrates everything and water and electricity are not a good mix. Rust is an obvious sign of water penetration.

Do you have any tips for people looking to save on their electric bill?

Switch to energy efficient heating and air conditioning equipment. The largest part of your electric bill is lost in wasted heating and cooling of inadequate and older systems.

How much electricity is wasted on average by the typical single-family living in a house?

Turn off those lights, upgrade those old heating and air conditioning systems, and don't waste electricity and water on half loads of laundry. Those 3 tips alone could save you hundreds or more a year in electricity costs.

For those looking to sell, how important is proper wiring in the value of the home?

Since almost everything now a days is run off electricity it is one of the most important components of your home. Having an older home with bare or damaged wires, rusted or corroded service equipment, or older knob & tube wiring is not only against code it's dangerous and a real safety hazard. Always make sure to have a licensed electrician perform any work in your home and ask for permits at the town hall if you question it.

What should customers look for in a qualified electrician?

Licensed and insured is a must. Check their reputation through the Better Business Bureau and best of all ask your neighbors and friends for experiences with the electrician you are choosing. Consider the appearance of the electrician and the truck he drives, both are going to be signs of the type of workmanship. An electrician that takes pride in their uniform or truck will also take pride in their work on a job for sure.

What is one of the most difficult services to perform that you offer?

Actual repairs, it is easy to remove something old and replace with something new but the real skill is in the troubleshooting/diagnostic to find and correct a problem without just replacing the equipment. Of course if the cost of a repair exceeds 50% of the cost of a new installation we offer both prices and let the customer make an informed decision.

What makes your services better/different than other comparable companies in the area?

We strive to make our customer service and customer relations the best in the industry. From explaining all portions of the work, detailing options, and answering questions with a smile to the follow through of a job being performed with good workmanship and keeping the customers home clean throughout the process. We also work on a flat rate which means you always know your final cost ahead of time, no hidden fee's or added hours when a job takes longer then expected. Our up front pricing assures our customers all get treated fairly the same price for the same job for every customer.
