Award-Winning Plumbing Services for Greater Boston: An Interview with David Elman of Baker-Elman Plumbing Co.

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a family owned plumbing company. We are a third generation company that has been in existence for close to 100 years. The services we offer range from plumbing repairs, remodeling, renovations, boilers, water heaters, etc as well as new construction.

How did you get into this line of work?

Being a third generation company, I started working with my father and grandfather at a very young age. It just became part of me and I decided that this was what I wanted to do for my profession.

You seem to offer an enormous amount of services; would you pick any specific ones out as your specialties?

We take pride in being able to work with the old plumbing systems that still exist in the Boston area and suburbs.

It says that you offer kitchen and bathroom remodeling as well. Does this include services that do not relate to plumbing and heating ie. Design, cabinetry, flooring?

We offer consultation so that when people are thinking about remodeling they understand that what homeowners might want to do cannot always be done.

What are some of the most innovative products you offer? Can these products really help you save on heating costs?

We offer high efficient boilers ranging up to 95% efficiency as well as water heaters that are high efficient up to 98%. All of these will save money in their utilities (gas) bills. Even though this is not heat related we offer automatic shut-off valves that will shut off your water if your water heater leaks, toilet leaks etc. It can be used with wireless sensors that detect water and then close off the main valve to your home.

What are some key qualities a homeowner should look for in a qualified plumbing and heating company?

You should look for a plumbing company that has a good reputation, longevity, honesty and will try to help the customer to reduce their costs even before they leave the office to do any type of work.

What should new homeowners be thinking about (related to plumbing and heating) once they settle into their new home?

They should assess their home by looking at doors and windows to make sure they are sealed. Electrical outlets can also be a big heat loss and they should tune up their heating systems before the winter sets in. Any place that there is an air gap will cost the homeowner money.

What are some of your most difficult types of projects?

We don't have difficult projects per se....we have challenges sometimes working in older homes where we try to preserve the old before we have to open up walls, floors, ceiling etc. We understand that what we work on will never be made like this again.

What are your favorite projects to work on?

We don't have favorite projects....we are happy to fix just a toilet to renovating your home. We are happy to be able to assist in any type of work if it can be done to make our customer happy.

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Is there anything you do better/different?

We were voted Best of Boston 2008 and Best of Boston Home also in 2008. David Elman, has been featured on the news for channel 4 and 7 as well as being featured on Channel 5's Chronicle program. Customer service sets us apart...it starts with our office staff who answers the phones from 7 - 5, books the jobs and to the mechanics who shows up at your home. All of our company is trained to be customer oriented and to make sure that the customer is always informed from beginning to end in every part of the job.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you?
