How To: Conducting a Home Remodel with Emerald City LLC.

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are Emerald City, a kitchen and bath showroom located in Plymouth, MA, specializing in fabricating and installing granite and quartz countertops. We are a small family owned and operated company that offering a variety of cabinetry, countertops and flooring options.

With so many counter options out there, how do I choose the right one for my kitchen? Are there benefits associated with different materials?

- What is your budget?
- Are you going to be selling the home in the future?
- Do you use the kitchen often for cooking and entertaining?
- Are you going to have time to clean and maintain the countertops?
- Would you like unique countertops or a simple color and pattern?

Once you have a better idea of what you expect from the countertop material, take a look at the differences between the options to see what's best for your kitchen:

Granite is a great product for resale because it adds value to your home. It is scratch and stain resistant and you can place hot pans on top of it for a short time. Granite should be cleaned regularly and sealed once each year. There are hundreds of different colors and patterns of granite, which means that you can design a truly beautiful and unique countertop.
Marble also adds resale value to your home. It is porous and soft, so it can stain and scratch easier than other products. Marble should also be cleaned regularly and sealed at least one per year. Like granite, it can vary in color and pattern from slab to slab, but white and grey slabs are currently the most popular.
Soapstone is a very soft stone, which means it can scratch easily. It should be cleaned and oiled regularly. The most common color of soapstone is grey, but by oiling the slab, you can darken it to the color you want.
Quartz is scratch and stain resistant. It should be cleaned regularly, but it does not need to be sealed. Many quartz brands have a warranty as well. Although there are more colors and patterns offered today, the color and pattern are usually consistent and uniform. There are usually less than 50 colors to choose from with each brand.
Recycled glass is a great eco-friendly product that can help add resale value to a home. It is scratch and stain resistant as long as it is waxed. The material should be cleaned regularly and waxed and sealed every year. Like quartz, the colors and patterns are usually consistent and uniform. Some brands incorporate shells into the material, which can add a unique feel.

Will I have a bigger return on investment if I purchase custom-made cabinets?

Almost every kitchen nowadays is pretty customized because of new techniques, technologies and the variety of options and upgrades that are available. This usually costs less and takes less time than having to hire a wood-shop to do everything completely custom. For example, we personally offer semi-custom cabinetry that can add a great return on investment because of their quality, customization, turnaround time and warranties.

Is it cost-effective for home builders and renovators to select wood flooring instead of less-costly materials?

Hardwood still seems to be the most desirable flooring. It is cost effective in the long run for resale and most wood floors can be re-finished to make them look brand new or re-stained to get a more desirable color. Today there are so many more flooring types which are cost-effective but won't last as long as hardwood. For example, sheet vinyl and laminate flooring have a warranty of about 10-15 years and will need to eventually be replaced. However, they are a good options for builders and renovators who are trying to save money.

What are some important questions to ask my contractor before beginning the remodel?

1. Are you insured?
2. Do you have references and pictures?
3. How long have you been doing these types of remodels?
4. How many similar jobs have you completed?
5. How well do you know the products you'll be using?
6. Who will be doing the work? Do you use subcontractors?

Do you have any other tips for those looking to remodel their kitchen or bathroom?

Be very wary of the big box stores. Just because they seem to be offering a low price, does not mean you are getting first quality products and service. Additionally, since they sub out all of their work, you do not know who is going to be stepping into your home.

For example, if you are looking to get a kitchen design, designers at the box stores, typically do not make site visits before designing kitchens. They send someone else to measure the kitchen and they do the design from those measurements. This can cause mistakes and missed details that the homeowner was looking for. Additionally, keep in mind that a well-designed and detailed project needs the time to be perfect. Everyone wants the remodel to go smoothly and there needs to be patience, especially while a homeowner is without a working kitchen for a period of time. Sometimes there are unforeseen issues and you want a company who knows how to deal with any obstacles that may arise so they can get it completed to your satisfaction.
