Quality Plumbing and HVAC Combined: An Interview with Eric C. Foster Plumbing, Heating, & Cooling LLC

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Eric C. Foster Plumbing Heating & Cooling LLC. was founded in 1978, by Eric Foster. Today we are a family business with Eric's three sons working for the company. We offer a wide variety of services ranging from new construction to basic plumbing, gas and HVAC repairs.

How did you get into this line of work?

I began working for the business when I was 16 years old. There really wasn't an option for summer employment; it was, "work for dad". I found that I really enjoyed the work and decided that this was the career path I wanted to follow. I went on to graduate from college with a degree in business, and began plumbing school in the evenings. Within a few years, I had completed all of the required schooling and earned a master plumbing license. I now feel a strong sense of pride in carrying on the family business.

You seem to offer an enormous amount of services; would you pick any specific ones out as your specialties?

We are very fortunate to have great employees that enable us to offer expertise in more than just one area; we truly rely on them to make us a well rounded company. Some of our employees focus strictly on service work, which can be anything from repairing a faucet or replacing a water heater, to changing out a garbage disposal or repairing a customer's heat during the winter months. Another group of employees focuses on new home construction and remodeling. We also have employees who specialize in heating and cooling and therefore focus on boiler replacements, air conditioning, and radiant heat. I cannot emphasize enough how vital our employees are to the success of our business.

It says that you offer kitchen and bathroom remodeling as well. Does this include services that do not relate to plumbing and heating ie. Design, cabinetry, flooring?

Yes, we are able to provide customers with complete kitchen/bath remodels. The benefit of having been in this industry for many years is that we have developed strong relationships with other great contractors. These relationships allow us to help customers through large remodeling projects.

What are some of the most innovative products you offer? Can these products really help you save on heating costs?

The industry is constantly evolving to offer more innovative and efficient products. We do a large number of water heater upgrades each year, where 60% efficient gas tank type water heaters are replaced with 96% efficient tankless water heaters. We install ductless A/C systems with heat pumps that operate in temperatures as low as -5 degrees. These heat pumps are an efficient alternative to running your boiler for heat in the early fall months when it begins to get chilly.

What are some key qualities a homeowner should look for in a qualified plumbing, heating, and cooling company?

The most important quality to look for in a company is excellent customer service. A company that stands behind their work is one that takes pride in the quality of their workmanship. Warranties on parts and labor reflect a company's workmanship, attention to detail, and confidence in the quality of the products they are selling. At Eric C. Foster Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, we warranty all parts and labor for one full year from the date of installation.

There are so many new and innovative products coming out related to plumbing and heating these days. How do you make sure that a new product is reliable before you recommend it to a customer?

We do not sell a product unless we believe it is a high quality product that will meet the customer's needs. We warranty all of the parts that we sell, which means that if we recommend it for your home it's a product we trust.

What should new homeowners be thinking about (related to plumbing and heating) once they settle into their new home?

Maintenance for your home's heating, cooling, and hot water is important to the equipment's longevity and efficiency. High efficient equipment needs servicing every 12-24 months to keep the unit working at peak performance. Keeping up on maintenance will lower the likelihood of having an issue with the equipment.

What are your favorite projects to work on?

Any project that solves a customer's need is a success for us. For some customer's the need may be a more efficient heating or cooling system, while for others it may be a renovation to an outdated kitchen or bath to make it a more enjoyable space. We pride ourselves in providing quality workmanship to meet these needs for our customers.
