A Natural Work of Art Outside Your Door: An Interview with Natural Path Landscaping, LLC

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Natural Path Landscaping provides innovative design and construction services for landscape construction projects that include: granite steps, walkways, patios, walls, driveways, etc. Our designs strive to use natural materials as much as possible and we often use granite in innovative ways that our customers appreciate. We are very detail oriented and work from CAD drawing and a thorough project description that is prepared beforehand and is part of our written contract with the homeowners. When we complete a job there are no loose ends and we clean up at the end of each day. None of our employees smoke, everyone is thinking on the job and we all speak native English so communication is never an issue. We have been in business for 10 years and did not see any downturn in our operations through the recent recession, which is a testament to our design services, craftsmanship and total focus on customer satisfaction.

What is your position at Natural Path Landscaping?

I am the President and Founder of Natural Path Landscaping, LLC.

Would you say you have a specific design style?

Design style varies depending upon the main structures present, the surroundings and the homeowner's taste. Our goal is to design hardscapes that blend and complement the home. Every winter we attend seminars and training classes so we are always up to date with the latest methods and products that lead to great results. Most recently, we have been pushing the boundaries with permeable paving to handle tricky drainage situations.

What are some techniques used to make sure the garden and landscape design match the surroundings?

We always begin our design process by understanding the homeowner's goals and then take pictures and measurements. Our design process begins by using AutoCAD to accurately draw the home and then experimenting with various approaches to produce the most visually appealing design within the confines of the property. The scale of the existing structures and surrounding space are always considered. We strive to use natural, local materials as much as possible. Finally, we try to utilize the existing grades, if possible, to better blend our construction activities into the existing landscape.

What skill set should you have in order to be a successful landscaper?

Personally, I have a very technical background in Engineering that is essential for the complex issues involved in landscaping such as drainage, slope and detailed design. In general terms, success in the landscape business is highly dependent upon: your design capability, your craftsmanship in building, your ability to communicate design ideas to potential customers, your ability to motivate your employees and your ability to handle the financial aspects of running a business. Of course, most importantly, you must love the outdoors and enjoy what you do.

You seem to offer many different services to your customers. Would you pick any specific ones out as your specialties?

One specialty that we have is working with granite in innovative ways. Granite is local to New England and therefore appropriate and very long lasting. We have a special niche when it comes to curved granite steps. We also utilize a random pattern bluestone very effectively because we design the pattern in AutoCAD before we even start the job. The look is unique and very beautiful.

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Do you believe you do anything better/different?

There are a number of things that set us above other companies. First, we are extremely focused on your project; we don't cut grass or do things like fall cleanups and we only run one job at a time. Second, Natural Path Landscaping, spends a tremendous amount of time up-front on the design with a detailed description and list of materials to produce a result that will not only be beautiful but also fully functional and long lasting. There will not be any hidden surprises or cost overruns because we didn't think things through to do the calculations necessary to assure that everything will work as planned. Finally, all our employees are focused and rewarded by doing the best possible job possible. We are all thinking on the job and pay attention to the details at all times. We love what we do and it shows.

What are your favorite projects to work on?

We don't have a favorite type of project but we always enjoy seeing our designs come to life and hearing what the homeowners have to say as their project unfolds. We do enjoy the challenges of working with heavy pieces of granite with its associated beauty and permanence that it brings to the home. We don't just implement the same thing over and over so our work never gets boring.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you?

First, I think everyone should take a look at our web site, which we update every winter, to see our work and verify that they like our design abilities and craftsmanship, www.NaturalPathLandscaping.com .
