Jewell Contracting Produces Gems

By Jake Levin

Initially, Daniel Jewell sought a career as a mechanic, something which had always been his dream job. After graduating from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass., Jewell fulfilled his career goal. But with kitchen remodeling in his blood, Jewell got back into construction in November 2001 and founded Jewell Contracting.

Jewell's father had run a similar business in western Pennsylvania in the 1970s, a business he hoped his son would one day take over. After crossing over a few state lines, Jewell has successfully put his vocational education to the test, running a flourishing business based out of Quincy, where he is the sole proprietor.

"Our specialty is kitchen remodeling and interior finish," Jewell said. "Often that will include relocating a door or window, or opening up walls to create a larger space."

No project is too big or too small for Jewell, who gladly takes on the smaller projects others seem to balk at. While kitchens and interior finish is what his company is known for, it's far from all Jewell Contracting does. Jewell said that he'll do decks, replacement doors and windows and other types of additions. The ideal client of Jewell's is one who is willing to explore changes to help enhance their project, he said.

"I like to see people get the most out of their projects," he said. "If someone is taking the time to have their home disrupted for a remodel, why not maximize any benefits from that remodel?"

Jewell said that the type of project which may seem limited by the size of the space said project is in; why not try to create a bigger space for the betterment of the project?

"If a wall cannot be moved, perhaps make a window larger, or explore different size moldings," Jewell said. "Other things can be upgraded to maximize the useful results, like hardware or fixtures."

Jewell is particular about certain products, saying that he does not skimp on cost. Quality products tend to last longer and function better, he said.

Of course, he adds, having a realistic budget helps. Not all clients are aware of the cost of a remodel, which is understandable, Jewell said, especially for those who have never undergone such a renovation. But Jewell Contracting is always willing to work with clients to sort out pricing and make the projects work.

"Sometimes, just having a clean, simple and cost effective solution for repairs or upgrades is all that is needed," Jewell said. "We can help sort out the right solution for whatever the project is."

Working directly with people is Jewell's favorite part of his job, one which he seems happy over a decade and a half later starting up to continue a family tradition.

"We can spend a lot of time in someone's home," Jewell said. "That affords us many conversations and relationships that are built during that time. Even if we don't get called back for other work, those conversations and memories with those clients don't just fade away."
