Johnson String Instrument: The Best of the Best Carefully Selected Just for You

By Elisha Neubauer

When it comes to finding the perfect shop to handle your string instrument needs, it can be daunting. Everyone offers the same product and services, right? Wrong. At Johnson String Instrument in Newton, Massachusetts, they are uniquely set up to accommodate players of ability levels unlike most other shops, which only cater to a specific level.

When it comes to standing out from their competition- it's not hard. According to Silvija Kristapsons, Media and Marketing for the shop, they are ahead of the curve in a few areas. "We have instrument rentals, teaching materials, all of the accessories a player could need, and extensive sheet music collection," Kristapsons states.

"We also have a large instrument and bow sales department with instruments ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 as well as a fully staffed workshop to handle repairs, rehairs, and maintenance of our instrument and bow stock. In addition, our website at www.johnsonstring.com allows us to serve customers around the country in addition to locally here in New England."

Whether just starting out or diving into teaching, Johnson String Instrument has everything you need to make your playing experience great. "Our rental instruments are expertly set up by our in-house rental workshop luthiers," Kristapsons explains.

"Even professional players struggle to play well on poorly set up instruments, so this is an important consideration at any skill level." They also offer the widest selection of instrument sizing, allowing a perfect fit for a player of any age. "Size exchanges are included with the rental, allowing our program to accommodate students' changing needs," Kristapsons states.

At Johnson String Instrument, you'll get everything you need in the all-inclusive rental package. Each rental outfit comes with an instrument, bow, case, rosin, and insurance included in the cost and the packages are available in three options: standard, advanced, and master. "We have rental options in increments of three months, with the best deal being a twelve-month rental where you pay for ten months and receive the last two months free of charge," Kristapsons affirms.

"You can also build equity; 100% of the first year's rent (excluding tax and insurance) plus 20% every subsequent year comes back to the renter in equity." This equity can be used to purchase either the rental instrument or a new instrument from their sales department located at Carriage House Violins. "We currently rent violins, violas, cellos, and basses," Kristapsons tells us.

Other services offered by Johnson String Instrument include instrument restorations and repairs, bow rehairing and repairing, appraisals for instruments purchased from Johnson String, and an extensive selection of books, sheet music, Suzuki materials, cases and accessories. For teachers, Johnson String provides the best rental program in the country, a vast selection of new and antique instruments and bows, sheet music, method books, teaching aids, and every imaginable stringed instrument accessory.
