Keeping Manomet and Pinehills Current

By Kelly Church

For the residents of Plymouth, MA communities Manomet and Pinehills, The Manomet Current is the primary independent online news source. The locally owned and operated publication focuses on issues that directly affect the communities, Editor and Publisher Matthew Nadler says.

"The mission of The Manomet Current is to provide up-to-date news about the villages of Manomet and the Pinehills in Plymouth," Nadler says. "I like to say that we're 'aggressively local.' I hope our role is to be the go-to place to know about what's happening in the community."

The community, Nadler says, has primarily seasonal residents, but many of them eventually become year-round Manomet residents. Due to affordable living and the close proximity to water, Nadler says people love coming to Manomet. Pinehills, however, he believes is one of the biggest reasons for population growth in Plymouth, experiencing rapid community growth in recent years. The Manomet Current is accommodating the population growth by adapting articles to what is affecting the community.

"The most important factor in deciding what we cover is whether it has a direct connection with the community," Nadler says. "The simple rule is that a story either has to have occurred in the community or involve someone from the community."

On The Manomet Current website, articles fit into the following categories: police and fire, community news, government, environment, news, school, sports, obituaries, business, business directory and calendar. From these, readers have all local Manomet and Pinehills news at their fingertips.

"We tend to cover boards and committees only when they're doing something that meets that criteria," says Nadler. "The only ones we cover regularly are the Manomet Village Steering Committee, which acts as a kind of community advisory board, and the Nuclear Matters Committee, which provides oversight for the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. Other regular topics of interest are the Simes House and the management of White Horse Beach. We also regularly cover the standard stuff of community journalism, including school news, police news, real estate news and sports."
