Lone Star Taco Bar Serves Up Traditional Mexican Street Food Right in East Cambridge

By S. Mathur

In 2012, two transplants from California and Texas decided that Boston needed a real taco bar. Since that day, Lone Star Taco Bar has expanded to two locations in Allston and Cambridge, become a popular favorite through word of mouth, and featured on Diners, Dives and Drive-ins. There's very little advertising and the building has no signs except for a single red star. But it's difficult to miss the line out the door and the energy generated by artisanal Mexican food and drink.

Partner and Co-Owner Max Toste explains, "At Lone Star we are a Mezcal and Tequila focused bar that serves our interpretation of traditional Mexican Street foods." What does it mean that the food and drink are artisanal? "All of our food is made fresh daily and we draw on authentic techniques and ingredients. For instance we make our corn tortillas fresh in house daily, all our fresh produce is delivered daily and whole and our fish is delivered everyday for our fish tacos. We do not have a freezer in our restaurant."

Ok, so no freezer sounds pretty artisanal. So does the grilled street corn which comes topped with cotija, cilantro, and chili-lime aioli and heads the list of appetizers. Likewise menu features such as house roasted, smoked, pickled, and fresh chilis, hand-made masa harina corn tortillas, slow-cooked pork carnitas, and mesquite-smoked beef barbacoa. The unique tacos and margaritas and the friendly atmosphere go a long way towards explaining the Lone Star's popularity.

Toste makes it all sound quite simple: "We pride ourselves on fresh honest food, the highest quality bar program we can provide and most importantly a hospitable inviting dinning experience. At the end of the day we aim to serve our neighborhood the best we can and make our guests feel as if they are dinning in our home."

In keeping with the neighborhood feel, all kinds of people are welcome here, says Toste, "We welcome any and all demographics. Our decor is meant to be comfortable and make our guests feel like they aren't in Boston anymore, but never feel kitschy or contrived."

From late-night eats to the brunch menu, which includes breakfast tacos, rachos huevros, jalapeño corn cakes and chorizo, there is something to suit everyone. There are even kid-friendly cheese quesadillas for the young ones.

Lone Star Taco Bar was recently named the Best Late-Night Restaurant of 2016 by The Best of Boston. Most customers agree in fact agree! See below for a couple testimonials.
