Mirasol's Cafe Provides A Worldly Bite In Southern Massachusetts

By Jake Levin

Richard A. Romero doesn't worry about the competition for Mirasol's Café. All he's concerned about is what he and his staff need to do to better serve its clientele in the South Coast town of Dartmouth, Mass.

Describing the establishment as casual and comfortable, Mirasol's is deep in Latin American influences. Its signature item is called CHiPPI, a super-caffeinated iced coffee which is sure to hit the spot. But there's much more on the menu at Mirasol's, which Romero said many people don't realize.

"We just don't serve CHiPPi?we have food and other fun drinks as well," Romero said. "Once in a while we have a customer that looks up and realizes that there is a food menu; it's kind of comical, really."

Labeling Mirasol's a "Worldwide Franchise of One," Romero set out to open the café to fill a niche he felt was missing in town. Customers have noted the feel or groove of the establishment, according to Romero, as well as the service and just the overall vibe of the café.

Romero enjoys every day on the job because while it all may see the same, it's actually all quite different. Whether it's a customer new or old, he takes great satisfaction in helping them around the café.

"My favorite is when someone new comes in and they are excited to try us out," Romero said. "Helping them and guiding them is pretty cool. Seeing that person come in again and again after the initial visit is cool."

Now in its 12th year of operation, Romero has seen many customers grow up before his very eyes, or more accurately, in front of the counter. From tagging along with their parents in middle school to driving themselves in high school to checking in on visits home from college, his customer base continues to grow up before starting the cycle anew.

Both indoor and outdoor seating options are available at Mirasol's, each area conducive for both groups and solo ventures trying to find a quiet spot.

Mirasol's Café is located at 439 State Rd. in Dartmouth and is open seven days a week; Monday-Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and "Pajama Sunday" from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (holiday hours vary).
