New Bedford's 'Baby Whisperer' Specializes in Maternity and Infant Photography

By Kelly Church

Proclaimed the baby whisperer by several clients, Abrah Zion is Miss Z of Miss Z Photography, specializing in infant, maternity and family photography. When clients hire Miss Z Photography, out of New Bedford, MA, they get the works: props, staging, outfits for babies and even maternity dresses for moms.

Zion does everything she can to get real emotions out of her photo shoots, giving each client something tangible to take home afterwards, and memories that are meaningful for families.

"At Miss Z Photography, we go the extra mile to provide our clients with just what they're looking for," Zion says. "We sit with each one to find out their needs and wants, and make sure we provide it. We try and match up our setups to the decor in their homes, so anything they order will fit in perfectly in their homes. We find the perfect props and outfits to make the session more meaningful.

We never rush our sessions -- they're always laid back with plenty of time for children to warm up, take breaks and have snacks if needed."

Zion describes her portfolio as a mix of classic and timeless photos, and more fun and creative ones that utilize unique props. She says the six-month shoots with babies are her favorite, as that's when infants start to gain their own features and personality traits. She loves capturing each baby's uniqueness on camera. Some of her shoots include babies covered in cake, in small tub with bubbles or simply being held by Mom and Dad.

"I have years of experience as well as special training in newborn posing and safety," Zion says. "I personalize every session and tailor it to every client. I start with an in person consultation and we sit down and plan out colors, themes and get to know each other. I provide all the props and outfits. I also have gowns for little girls and maternity gowns for pregnant mamas."

About two weeks after each session, clients come back to Zion to order photos in person. She projects each photo up on a wall and Zion goes through each one with the client. She shows examples of how images will look on the clients' walls before they purchase anything. Other than framed photos, Zion offers canvases, metal prints, acrylic blocks, albums, note cards and even personalized jewelry.

"At ordering sessions, we help clients choose the products that will work and look best in their homes, whether it's wall collages, or photo albums," Zion says. "We also help with choosing the best gifts for family and friends. We form a relationship with each and every client. Throughout the whole process from the time the client first contacts us until way after we have delivered their order, we call and reach out to them. That's why our clients keep coming back to us, year after year."
