Party Planning Made Easy: Featuring Party Favors of Brookline

By Kristen Bosse

With all the stress coming our way day to day, it's good to take a break every once in awhile and engage in some good, clean fun. This is why parties were invented- to bring zero stress, spread laughter, and give us a chance to catch up with people we enjoy being around. But what about planning the party- can that be zero stress as well? Mary Lynn Pergantis, Owner of Party Favors in Brookline, stresses that planning a party can be as easy as taking a trip to her store! From custom cakes, cupcakes cookies, candies, and party supplies, they have everything on hand to help you prepare the perfect event.

Since 1965, Party Favors of Brookline has designed custom cakes, cookies, candies and pastries for customers in the greater Boston area and throughout New England. They are a full service party store and bakery that carries a complete line of party supplies such as streamers, balloons, confetti, banners, tablecloths, plates, cups and napkins. They also carry gifts, wrapping paper, stationery, place cards, table numbers, greeting cards and invitations. Favors and centerpieces are available by custom order.

Their kitchen produces award-winning cakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, bar and bat-mitzvahs, showers or any special occasion. Whether you are serving four or four hundred, they can help you create a cake to be enjoyed and remembered by all. Mary Lynn was nice enough to share with us some great tips on party planning and how her staff can help!

Sticking to a Budget

Not surprisingly, one of the most important things to consider when planning a party is to make sure you stick to your original budget. Hosts are encouraged to set a budget before they start looking around at various flowers, cakes, decorations, etc. This guarantees that you are in the right mindset before you begin your search, therefore decreasing the risk of overspending. Try not to think of a budget as a restrictive concept, but rather a smart way to make sure your "fun" doesn't interfere with real life expenses.

If you are having trouble fitting everything you want into a budget, Pergantis recommends selecting your main priority for the party. Is it your dream to have fresh lilies at the center of each table? Do you want a custom cake that goes along with your theme? Do you need an ice sculpture to go along with your Christmas decorations? The sooner you figure out the priority, the sooner you know how much money you have left for the rest of the elements.

Choosing a Theme

The number one tip for party planning is choosing a theme. For a child's party, that can mean a movie-related theme, like "Frozen" or "Cars," and for an adult it can be as a simple as planning around a favorite color. If you are planning a party for a friend or family member, be sure to consider the interest and hobbies of the guest of honor. For example, if he or she is an avid fan of a particular sports team, the party venue could be decorated with crepe paper and balloons in the team's colors, and you can hang posters featuring players from the team. If you're throwing a party for a child, find out what his or her favorite color is and base the theme on it: a pink princess party for a very feminine little girl or a camouflage party for a boy who likes reptiles. Those who wants some sweets to go along with a wine tasting party can feel free to hit up Party Favors- look at the delicious cake they made below!

Once you have selected a theme, it is important to decide on a venue. If you know there is a place your guest of honor frequents or enjoys, check into renting that space. If your theme doesn't go with the local bar or banquet hall, make sure you are searching for the correct type of space. For example, a Tiki party typically calls for an outdoor venue, whereas a Tea party should be in more of an intimate environment. Most importantly- don't forget to mention the theme on your invitations so your guests can join in on the fun!

Food, Food, and More Food!

Apart from making sure you have enough food on hand to feed your guests, you also want to make sure it stays on theme as well. Be sure you ask the person you're throwing the party for what his or her favorite foods are. If it's a surprise party, ask a spouse, parent or child. Cakes, cupcakes, and various sweets will no doubt be a must, as they can be designed on theme and serve as another decoration.

Cupcakes have become increasingly popular over the years as an alternative to cake because guests can serve themselves at their leisure. Party Favors offers large and petite cupcakes in a variety of flavors such as Boston crème, peanut butter, red velvet, oreo, and the classic birthday confetti. "Sometimes, customers will order a themed cake and cupcakes to go with it", Mary Lynn claims. "For example, we make a farm-themed cake that includes a big red barn; it can be fun to surround the barn with cupcakes that feature various farm animals." Check out one of their amazing Halloween themed cakes above. The bakery also offers an assortment of tarts, pies, and tortes for those that want something a bit different than cake. No matter what your taste- they've got it covered!
