Playing the Soundtrack of your Meal at Somerville's Neighborhood Kitchen

By Elisha Neubauer

At the Highland Kitchen, they know it's more than just the food that makes a place. They've worked hard to ensure guests receive the best service, best food, and best music possible! It's all about ambiance and the Highland Kitchen has got it down pact; just ask their many reviewers!

"You can count on Highland Kitchen," states Morgan Bigley, General Manager. "The always-friendly staff serves consistent, high-quality food and drink for a reasonable price. The atmosphere is funky, lively, casual & family-friendly." Funky is the perfect adjective to use for this adorable eatery, with its exposed brick and modern lighting. The space manages to perfectly combine contemporary and classic style, while giving it a fun and fresh feel. You're already in a good mood, just from setting foot in the building.

If the décor doesn't set your heart a-joy, the music certainly will. According to the Boston Globe, the Highland Kitchen has "One of the Best Stocked Jukeboxes in Town." Their music selection has also been mentioned as a "Kickin' Jukebox" by the Boston Herald, "Top Five Jukeboxes in the City," by CitySearch, and "Killer Sound from the Jukebox," by the Weekly Dig. Clearly, any jukebox that gets this much publicity is worth the trip!

The mix of patrons you'll find within the walls of this eclectic institution is almost as impressive as the tunes pouring out of the jukebox. "Highland Kitchen is truly a neighborhood restaurant," explains Bigley. "On any given night you will see quite a mix of people in the restaurant or at the bar." A lot of this is due in part to their 'Weekly Goings On,' a list of which can be located on their website. Their events include things like Fried Chicken & Tiki Mondays, Spelling Bee Night, The People's Karaoke, and varying Live Music Sundays.

When it comes to food, you've got a unique selection to choose from, which rivals the atmosphere and soundtrack equally. Bigley gave us a little tip on what dish seems to be a crowd favorite, "The Buffalo Fried Brussels Sprouts are one of our favorites- crunchy, spicy, vinegary ... and Vegetarian!"
