Rasayana Helps You Find Your Inner Guru

It was a long, winding road for Kris Quinones to find yoga. A brown belt in tae kwon do, Quinones sustained a hip injury while competing and needed to find a way to rehab her ailing body. Enter yoga, which helped bring Quinones back to 100 percent and started her down the path to where she is today. Now Quinones is a well-traveled, well-trained, yogi that has learned from masters in India and now passes her knowledge onto the people of Somerville. She took some time to answer some questions for Mass Realty about her work and inspirations.

How would a potential client benefit from your massage services on a regular basis?

Therapeutic massage, like most holistic approaches, works best when done at a regular interval. If working with an acute issue or chronic injury, having sessions every 7-10 days for 4-6 weeks is a good start. Scar tissue and adhesions can be manipulated to allow for a greater range of motion in the body, and other benefits include pain reduction without a reliance on medication, increased body-awareness, greater sense of ease and calm for the nervous system, longer-lasting energy levels, smooth/hydrated skin, nurturing touch, improved sleep and lymphatic flow resulting in a stronger immune system.

What advice would you give to beginning yoga practitioners?

Move slow, listen to your intuition, and know your body's limits. There are lots of styles out there, so try several to see which resonates with your needs best. The type of people who typically get injured in yoga are Type A personalities, who in their enthusiasm and desire for perfection, push past their skill set before developing the right tools to get them to the next level. Also, do not fall in love with a guru. Fall in love with the lessons of yoga. They are eternal. Teachers are not.

What else would you like to convey to the public about your what you do? What do you enjoy about your job?

Rasayana is where I combine my 20+ years of professional experience in orthopedics, competitive sports, clinical massage, yoga, and Ayurveda to help down-to-earth, eco & socially-conscious professionals, who are are feeling stretched-out, over-scheduled, and over due for an overhaul in their self-care and energy levels. It's a tribe of wellness pros, healthcare and social workers with a holistic bent, yoga instructors, scientists, change-makers, and the naturally curious who feel drawn to nature and the wisdom of ancient traditions.

But I think what I'm most proud of as a company, what sets me apart from others, is my commitment to highly trained and dedicated relationship-centered care and my commitment to using organic and fairly traded herbs (when possible) from vendors that exercise sustainable agro-forestry practices so my treatments are safe, effective, and healing for both the body and the planet, delivered with the highest standards of care.
