Red Dog Pet Resort and Spa: A Pampered-Pet Paradise

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

"We treat your pet as if they are our own," says the Red Dog Pet Resort and Spa motto. Providing Boston with its first full-scale pet care center, the 43,000 facility is located near South Bay Mall and Boston Medical Center and offers a place for pets to swim, play, and sleep.

The first Red Dog was opened in Cincinnati, Ohio about eight years ago. After owner Eric Schneider attended school in Boston, a second location was opened here in 2001. Schneider says, "We came up with the name Red Dog because we are from Cincinnati, where we have the Cincinnati Reds. Also, we saw how much people were attached to the Black Dog in Martha's Vineyard."

As a pampered-pet overnight stay and daycare resort, Red Dog has onsite professional staffing 24 hours of every day. Offerings for your pet include: indoor and outdoor play spaces, indoor aquatic center for swimming, training and behavior modification programs, dog walking, chiropractic care, grooming, spa services, and treats.

A partnership with Skipton Pet Center and Boston Animal Hospital means this dog hotel is now able to offer on-site veterinary care and pet supplies to their canine clients.

Although there is a reference to canines in the business name, felines are more than welcome. They can stay overnight in individual rooms or multiple-level spaces with sunlight and air exchange and plenty of purified water. There is even a "meow hour" with an extra treat and playtime using feathers or climbing!

While a big pool of water is not exactly the cat's meow, many dog breeds possess natural swimming abilities and a love of splashing around. Red Dog's indoor aquatics center fits the bill, allowing swimming for fun or fitness. Here dogs that recently had surgery or who have stiff joints or arthritis can swim in warm water to ease any pain and limber up the limbs. Your pet can also swim as exercise to combat obesity.

Schneider feels a need to give back to the Boston community that supports his business, supplying donations and gift baskets for local charities.
