Retro Mod in Kendall Square at KIKA Tapas

By Elisha Neubauer

The Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts is well-known for its unique restaurants, bustling industry, and stunning apartment buildings, but when KIKA Tapas moved in, it got a whole new kick of pizzazz. Like nothing else you've experienced before, KIKA strives to pull you in, capture your attention, and dazzle your taste buds with a dazzling array of Spanish Tapas and unique cocktails.

KIKA Tapas takes its name from the movie that inspired the décor- KIKA by Pedro Almodovar. In an effort to pay homage to the melodramatic movie, you're transported into Brazil circa 1970; stumbling through vivid shades of red, black, and white interspersed with eye-popping patterns and combinations of wood and quartz. And, of course, you'll find an impressive collection of Almodovar movie posters and artwork. Carlos Reverendo of KIKA Tapas referred to the interior design of this unique eatery as, "Retro Mod," when we asked him to give the design a title. "It's all red, black and white in contrasting patterns with round booths and halo or ring chandeliers. The bar top is a cream quartz color that is lit from the inside."

When it comes to the food choices, Reverendo says it is, "Mostly small plates to be shared." The menu is decorated with food options from Spain, with some Latin American choices painted in. KIKA Tapas offers a selection of over 40 traditional tapas, as well as sandwiches, salads, and at 30 gluten-free and vegetarian choices. "Our menu also includes Paellas, traditional saffron rice dish with everything from seafood to chicken or sausage cooked in it," he details.

For those who are first time visitors to KIKA, Reverendo offers some order suggestions: Garlic shrimp, Tortilla, which is made from potato, egg and onion frittata; Bunuelos, made from Broccoli and Cauliflower fritters; Albondigas, delicious lamb meatballs in a truffle cream sauce, paellas; and Berenjena Rellena, a crafted vegetable stuffed eggplant roll in a spicy tomato-garlic sauce. He also reminds us not to forget the Croquette of the day! And when you've finished the meal? "Sangria and Churros for dessert," he chuckles.

The Kendall Square area is expanding daily, sprouting new biotech businesses and buildings on a weekly basis. Boasting an international business and biotech population, KIKA fits right in, giving business personnel, residents, and tourists a unique space with an enticing atmosphere.

KIKA Tappas is located on Broad Canal Way, just one block from the Marriott Hotel and Kendall Square T-stop. "At the end of our street is a Canoe and Kayak rental service," states Reverendo. "Kika has a huge patio in the summer with views of Boston, Longfellow Bridge and the Charles River."
