Southern Hospitality Nestled in Newton, Part 1: Featuring Alderwood Bed & Breakfast

By Kristen Bosse

Staying at a bed and breakfast is a wonderful alternative to the usual hotel stay. Most B&B's are settled in quaint neighborhoods, with restored finishing's and lush gardens. While some establishments go for the cozy "old home" feel, others go for a more luxurious and modern oasis. Either way, the environment is always warm and focused on the highest level of hospitality. And who can complain with a homemade breakfast to wake up to? B&B's cater to those that love to travel, yet prefer not to lose the cozier feel that a home inherently brings. Hosts must be well versed in superb customer service skills and an organic friendliness. All of this together encompasses the concept of "Southern Hospitality" at its finest.

Alderwood Bed and Breakfast

Alderwood Bed and Breakfast is a colonial-style home located on a quiet street in Newton, MA. The home has a definite cozy feel, filled with paintings and artifacts collected during the hosts' travels. Two second floor guest rooms include a spacious Queen and a cozy Single room. Rooms may be booked separately for multiple parties, or together with a shared bath. Gourmet breakfast is served in the light filled solar kitchen and on the adjoining deck.

Other amenities include free WiFi, TV, hair dryer, toiletry basket, alarm clock, computer, library, and much more! Both Myra and Richard truly enjoy hosting their guests and catering to their specific needs. For about thirty years now, they have started each day with charming company and delightful conversation. And don't forget about Precious, their shy but friendly Saimese cat.

"Good hosting, southern and otherwise, to me means letting my guests know how much I appreciate their patronage as well as making sure their stay is comfortable and enjoyable", Myra says. "Guests at our B&B often say that they feel like they are visiting old friends rather than staying in a place of lodging. That, to me, is the ultimate compliment. B&B's are often an extension of someone's private residence so staying in hosted home is a much more personal experience than staying in a hotel or motel. We like to think we roll out the red carpet for our guests and make them feel very much welcomed."

One of the more unique aspects of this particular B&B is the environment of the home. Apart from its palpable warmness, the rooms are filled with dozens of artifacts, sculptures, and masks from their world travels. This gives off an exotic, yet soothing environment. Although Myra used to be a management consultant, she spends most of her days now working on oil paintings- her true passion. She also loves photography and captures many images in her travels that become inspiration for her paintings. Of course, these paintings are also displayed all across the house, giving guests a truly special addition to their stay.

Both Myra and Richard admit that one of the secrets to being good hosts is that they truly enjoy their experience with each guest. "I have come to see how genuinely good and kind and considerate people from all over the world are. It has reinforced my belief that we are much more alike than we are different." They take the time to get to know each individual and think about certain ways to improve their experience, even going as far as to cater to their dietary needs during breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast, Myra says another favorite part of each visit for them is the continental homemade breakfast in the morning. "And finally, one of the highlights of the experience for us has been having breakfast with our guests. Few hosts do this we are told, and for us, these morning communals are perfect beginnings to each day."

It is evident that both hosts not only enjoy the experience of being a B&B, but genuinely enjoy getting to know each guest making their stay comfortable and their experience memorable. When being a host goes beyond amenities and shifts into a honest interest in their experience, it absolutely mirrors southern hospitality.
