Chicopee Gym Uses Coaching to Train For Improved Quality of Life

By Kelly Church

As an exercise community, Train for Life in Chicopee, MA holds gym members accountable by creating camaraderie, requiring appointments and believing in fitness as a journey. Co-owners Drew and Jordan McConaha said many gyms can be intimidating and confusing, which doesn't benefit members, but Train for Life removes both of those factors. The gym uses coaching to take members' fitness to the next level while preventing injury.

"It is our mission to inspire others to move well, be strong and enjoy life," Jordan and Drew said. "Our programs are offered in a small or large group format, or as a combination of the two."

When it comes to small group training versus large group training, the McConahas said the difference is in catering to different numbers of people. Small group training sessions follow a more individualized approach compared to large group. These sessions have 10 or less members under the supervision of 2 coaches. In these training sessions, each person gets their own workout program, designed to increase range of motion, improve power and strength, and burn fat all in one hour

Large group training is designed to accommodate up to 30 members with a well-qualified coach. These sessions are structured and balanced in order to provide a well-rounded, full-body workout program which operates on 4-week cycles. These sessions have progressions and regressions for every movement, and can suit the needs of all fitness levels, from beginner to advanced. Members can expect to burn 600-1,000 calories per session.

"Our program prioritizes full body workouts that help to increase strength, increase mobility, and burn fat in every session," Jordan and Drew said. "Attending workouts [regularly], following a balanced diet (no crash diets here) and getting plenty of recovery, we help to guide our members in the areas they need to reach their health and fitness goals. We teach a lifestyle-approach to fitness by helping build one habit at a time."

To keep members' bodies moving properly, Train for Life also offers massage therapy. Massages are offered to members and non-members. For those who want to make massage a regular part of their fitness routine, they can add a monthly massage to their membership at a discounted rate.
